Advice on IMAC upgrades

Getting back to the OP: How much would you like to spend? If your trying to keep this as low as possible i would recommend building a pc... you'll get better parts but as tlarkin said you won't be able to run that certain program (forgot the name. sue me!)

But you have a lot of choice with either platform.
 
iMac sure work really well I am a fan of their OS.
And of course if you build an exact specs sytem on PC taking their IPS-LED display in consideration the PC would be of almost the same price.
But since his work is not centered around displays like video/photo editing he can go for a cheaper option "THE PC".

I am unfamiliar with this product or Mac's in general so I will be basing this post solely on the program's requirements vs my knowledge of computers.

4GB of ram is more that likely all you will need.
* At least 2GB of RAM for large EXS instruments.
Although I don't know what EXS instruments are it's always safe to double the recommended specs.

CPU wise which IMAC are you looking after. The 3.0 GHz Core 2 Duo are fast CPUs and the quad cores are even faster. Depends on how much you want to spend.

Hard drives are getting dirt cheap nowadays so the 1TB is a good option. The HDD's that come with the iMac have a good speed to them.

Graphics card doesn't really matter since you'll be doing audio.
