Memory: 2X OCZ Technology Titanium 4GB DDR2 SDRAM Memory Module - 4GB $68 x 2

video card: ATI HD4870 SAPPHIRE HD 4870 1G DDR5 LITE DUAL $273

Storage: Samsung 1TB SATA2 7200RPM/32MB Cache (Spinpoint) - HD103UJ $126

Monitor: Samsung 22" $220

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12MB(2x6M) 1333MHz LGA775 $360

Not the system I would build with $2000...where are you from in the world? Some of those prices are strange. Asus P5E for $300+

What store are you planning on buying the hardware from?

Not the system you would build. Can you be any more specific? what would you change the most?

btw im from Canada, so amounts are in Canadian dollar, sorry for the confusion

That is a good list, but there are a few items I would replace.

Replace the power supply with this 650 Watt Power Supply:
Antec EA650 650W Continuous Power - $103
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371015

I would replace the Western Digital Hard Drive with this one:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500 gigabyte Hard Drive - $77.50
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148395

There is no reason to pay that much for a case. This computer case is only $51.

I would NOT do any of the recommendations by 2048 (nothing against you, just your choices lol). The Corsair powersupply will be more future proof for any additions or future video card upgrades. Seagate harddrives suck (my opinion) and I defiantly would stay away from them with all their recent problems (issues with firmware upgrades bricking harddrives and very high failure rates on the Barracuda's) . And lastly the 900-2 has much more space then the 300. It is a gorgeous case for it's money and the 50 dollar savings would not be worth getting the 300.

Scouts list is great and I would stick with the parts he said.

I've heard the Western Digital Caviar hard drives are the ones with quality control issues not the Seagate Barracudas. Any information source on Seagate quality control of their hard drives?

You are also recommending an 850 Watt power supply? That is overkill don't you think? A 650 Watt would definitely supply all his future power supply needs.

But 75 compared to a 1800 dollar budget I would go with the higher PSU. Down the road he will have to upgrade then he will be out 100 dollars for the 650watt PSU. He could have just spent the money on the larger PSU in the first place. A larger PSU will not have to work as hard with his setup which will mean it will last longer too. Yea it's more than what he needs but he will never be in spot where it's not enough and that could happen easily with the 650 if he got another video card.

Seagate just recently had all those problems with their harddrives, so they gave their customers a firmware update but that in turn bricked the harddrive. From my experience working at a computer shop, we had a ton less WD's come back then any other drive. After awhile we just started selling WD's exclusively because of it.

I just bought a 250 gigabyte Seagate Barracuda Model ST3250310AS hard drive earlier this month. Hopefully I got a good quality one (if not my entire hard drive is imaged on to another hard drive).

In March 2008 I bought an 80 gigabyte Seagate Barracuda Model ST380815AS that hasn't given me any problems yet.

It's sad to hear both Western Digital and Seagate's quality control has dropped on their hard drives. I heard Western Digital and Seagate only warranty their hard drives for three years now. They used to have a five year warranty on their drives.

Yea I think only certain models come with the 5 year warranty. It seems none of the manufacturers are backing their product anymore.

My opinions are just that, opinions. Some people have great luck with Seagate drives but out of like 6 or so I have bought half failed and from the 30 plus WD's (lost count) only 4 have died. That plus all the recent happenings with Seagate has turned me off from them for life.

What models of Seagate did you buy that have failed?

Thank you 2048 and Thermal Reactor for your excellent input.

I'm going to have to agree with Thermal Reactor on this one though. I think a good case and PSU are two things i dont mind shelling out a few more bucks to save me some future headaches.

As for the HDD, How about i get a Samsung 1TB spinpoint for $100. I dont know of any quality issues with Samsung's spinpoint.

This is the system im thinking now:

I have the Antec 900 case, and it's awesome. However, I agree that the 300 case is just as good, it basically the same case, it just doesn't have the large 200mm fan on the top nor the intake fans on the front. The fans are actually surprisingly quiet, but definitely understand hesitance to pay an extra $75 bucks for some extra fan cooling.
