Advice on RAID 0 or Velociraptor

What do you think would work better from a performance viewpoint

2 of these, using RAID 0

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 32MB, SATA-300, OEM

or

one of these

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB Hard Drive - 10K, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM

Cost is about the same.
 
I would have to go with the RAID since you get 2TB and im sure the Raptor even at 10K RPM wouldn't beat the RAID, also those faster 10K drives get hotter and are more likely to fail but for RAID, if even one drive goes, all of your data goes.
 
im not sure about the raid but i thought that the velociraptor was one of the best performing hard drive's....

even if it was i would still go with the 2tb in raid just for the storage, you'll never have to worry about space.

me im gonna get a velociraptor in raid
 
Yeah, 2 Velociraptors in RAID0 would be the way to go if I had the money

Maybe I'll just wait till they come down in price, or my salary goes up.

It was the price of them that caught my attention. I don't need space like that.

It appears that RAID 0 is a better solution than a single fast drive. But how do you 'upgrade' an existing system to RAID 0?

I am guessing that I can do a complete backup using Acronis, install 2 hard drives, and then somehow recover from the backup dvd, but don't know. Does that sound reasonable?

You'll need to reinstall the OS onto the RAID array. Of course you'll want to backup all your data, but I don't think placing an old OS image onto the new array would work. The OS would fail to boot, as it wouldn't recoginze RAID controller.
