Advice please...I'm panicking right now (removing thermal paste)

FWIW, I've had Socket 775's locked/unlocked well over 20 times before. I know they say 'after 20...', but I've seen great mileage with some MoBo's. My IL9 Pro is probably closer to 30 at this point. Also, while you shouldn't be rough with MoBo's, feel free to be firm with them - the PCB can hold a lot of pressure so long as you're gentle with it and don't use jerky motions.

Thanks. Right now everything is settled down again. The paste is cleaned up, the CPU is installed, the motherboard isn't. It's basically a decision to try the Freezer 7 Pro again, or go with the stock cooler.
 
I'd give the Freezer another go-around. If you still have the same problem, then try the stock.

Yup, now a piece just broke off, so I'm done with it. The stock went it the first time. As long as it's quiet, it will be fine. I'm not an overclocker. :)

lol, almost done! everything else is so easy except for that damn HSF! but i do have another question, which i'll post in the sound card forum :)
