advise with hard drive upgrade?

I have a 2-3 year old dell dimension 9100 with a full 160 gig hard drive. (mostly music).

It is time for an upgrade. I think I am going to get a 500 gb WD caviar se16, unless someone has other suggestions???

My question is, should I leave my old drive in and just run the OS and programs off it, with my media on the wd drive? or should I take it out and use the new 500 gig drive for everything?

Western Digital makes nice solid hard drives so no worries there.

As for whether to keep the 160gb as you main drive and have the 500gb be for media, that is really up to you.

You can keep the 160 the way it is and just throw on any other data onto the 500gb, or you can make the 500gb drive your main drive. Just have to reinstall windows and any other programs you might have or want on there. Really it comes down to personal preference. Its a good chance to get a fresh install of windows if you think you might have spyware or something on you existing drive. Just don't go opening up your existing drive while in your new install of windows or that idea can easily go out the window.

Really it comes down to personal preference.

reinstalling windows is no problem, I guess I was wondering if I would gain some performance by running both drives?

I dont understand what you mean by "don't go opening up your existing drive while in your new install of windows"?

If I were buying an hard drive I'd look for:

1. Cache, 16MB preferred.
2. 7200RPM
3. Low seek times
4. SATAII

I just ordered the WD,

I am still wondering if it would be faster to use both drives, or just the new WD (which im pretty sure has better specs than the dell im using now)???
