Aftermarket HSF for the E8400?

I'm curious if it's really necessary to get an aftermarket cooler for the E8400, or if the stock cooler is good enough. I know most builders swear by aftermarket products in this case, but I don't intend to overclock or do anything intense. I just want a quiet HSF that keeps the CPU cool.

I was reading some reviews of the Freezer Pro 7 and a few of them mentioned that it's actually *louder* than the stock fan. Well, I'm sure the stock fan keeps the CPU cool enough for my needs, so I'm guessing that my preference would be for silence. If an aftermarket cooler is actually going to be louder, then maybe it's not worth it?

anything is better than the stock cooler, but if you don't intend to overclock then it should keep it cool at stock speeds.

But better in what way? Maybe it keeps the CPU cooler than the stock fan, but is this at the cost of noise? If the stock fan cools well enough and is quieter, then I'd prefer that. I just keep hearing two completely different things sometimes about whether certain HSFs are loud or not.

If you don't want to spend much, i would get the Freezer pro 7. If you have seen how small the stock heatsinks are that come with these things, i would be scared to even have it running it at stock speeds.

If it was me, i would get the pro 7. Shouldn't be loud, and will keep it alot cooler.

If you go for a zalman, get the 9700. I would get something like the zerotherm nirvana or tuniq tower, if you have a large case. The only reason i got the zalman was because of the size, its 110mm so it fits slightly better in mid-atx cases than a 120mm cooler would.

But, they are all great coolers, if your not overclocking then the freezer pro should serve you well.

Don't forget to mention the blood. I cut 4 knuckles screwing my Zalman in.

If you want a quiet cooler, then I suggest buying a quiet cooler. That means no Zalman, no Arctic whatever, and no stock Intel either.

Anything that lets you use your own 120mm fan, and then you can pick your own quiet fan and change it without catastrophic loss if you don't like it. Personally, I think any CPU cooler without a modular fan option is stupid. I mean, what happens when the fan burns out? Buy a new $50 heatsink? Dumb.

That'd be like having to buy a new case when your case fan burns out.

Come to think of it, they actually make computer cases where you have to do that.

Including a popular one made by Antec.
