AGEIA PhysX physics accelerator

No and no... There are what, like 6 games that actually support it? And why not just use another processor core for physics? I mean once we have quad cores more standard, I can't see games requiring all the cores when they also have the GPU!

Amen.. er... i mean, i do agree with that :) very few games actually support it.. and i dont think it will make its breathrough anytime soon ( probably not even at all)

From what I've heard from people who are obsessed with fps that in some cases it actually lowers them because it adds a bunch of extra crap on ur screen, like extra grass n stuff...Right now it just doesnt seem worth 300 bucks when like others said, nothing really seems to support it yet. i mean if more games dont support it they may not even catch on. and arent there 2 different types of the physics cards...who knows which one will actually pull ahead(or has that happened yet lol). i dont kno. if one doesnt i just see another bluray/hddvd thing with these, one will prob come out on top and those with the other will lose suppport

This AEGIA Physx card is just a specialised processor; specialised to undertake mathematical calculations, and it handles these calculations FAR better than a CPU.

However, this creates more work for your GPU. It has to render more objects, so of COURSE your fps is going to drop a bit.

From all the stuff I've read, the Physx card just serves to remove the CPU as a bottleneck when physics-heavy games arrive. Playing a physics-heavy game without a physics card MAY result in the CPU bottlenecking, but I honestly have no idea. I honestly can't see future CPU's not being able to handle future physics-heavy games.

That was true at the beginning, but now games are able to take advantage of the PhysX card and actually improve the framerates.

If the game supports it..

bingo :) and as far as i know.. very few games actially use the physx card... so imo, its a bit wasted money

If you guys have seen the video from IDF (Intel Developers Forum) where they showed how the upcoming game Alan Wake utilizes cores, they actually made use of all the power they could. They had a Kentsfield CPU running at about 3.7GHz and probably a Quad SLI setup, as they said it had nVidia graphics solution and they want the best performance they can get.

They showed a hurricane ripping through buildings etc. in the game, and in order to calculate the physics they dedicated one of the 4 cores to do just that. I don't think many games out now do that kind of thing with multi-core CPU's. Here's the video. You guys should pretty quickly notice that one of the guys talking is from Finland. :p

WOW!!! the vid quality looks like crap cuz its youtube so ur like ehh doesnt look special. but once they hit the water and changed the weather it was like holy s***. the tornado was cool, and the amount of physics they put into it. but i was more impressed with the quality of the sceneries and the lighting...but all i can say is wow!!!now i see a reason/use for 4 cores. it would make the gaming experience amazing...all i can say is wow
