AGH needing help!

I had some windows problems so i backed up important files on another hard drive before formatting the main one. After reinstalling windows i went to access this hard drive and windows told me that it wasnt formatted! can i get these files back in any way?

the only thing i can think of at the min is a data recovery tool http://www.data-recovery-software.net/

Apart from that i have no idea
