AGP or AGP2?

Hi

My graphics card is giving up the ghost, so I need to replace it.

I have an ASUS P4P800, which claims to have an AGP 8x (1.5v) slot.

Is this AGP or AGP2? I've seen cards for sale thet require a "AGP2" slot, but I'm not sure if mine is or not.

Can anyone help?

Also, what's this new PCI-E format? Is this a different slot altogether?

As far as I know, there were three specifications. AGP, AGP 2.0 and AGP 3.0. The last one supported X2,X4 and X8. The AGP 2.0 standard supported X4 and X2 and the oldest supported X2. The PCI-Express slot is entirely different and definitely the way to go now.

I assume then that as my board is AGP 8x I must have an AGP3 slot then.

I'd luv to go down the "latest" route with PCI-E, but my board doesn't allow me to do that (no PCI-E slot).

What's the best AGP card still around then? Do they still do em?

Here's more detailed info on the AGP specifications:

The AGP 1.0 specification defined 1x and 2x speeds with the 3.3v keyed connector.
The AGP 2.0 specification defined 1x, 2x and 4x speeds with the 3.3v, or 1.5v keyed connector or a 'Universal' connector which supported both card types.
The AGP Pro specification defined 1x, 2x and 4x speeds with the 3.3v, or 1.5v keyed connector or a 'Universal' connector which supported both card types.
The AGP 3.0 specification defined 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x speeds with the 1.5v keyed connector or a 1.5v AGP Universal / Pro connector.
Each up-grade is a supper-set of the 1x mode, so 4x will also support the 1x speed. The base clock rate is 66MHz, but to achieve to 2x, 4x, and 8x speeds the clock is doubled each time. AGP uses both edges of the clock to transfer data.

AGP (1x): 66MHz clock, 8 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 266MB/s [3.3V or 1.5V signal swing]
AGP 2x: 133MHz clock, 8 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 533MB/s [3.3V or 1.5V signal swing]
AGP 4x: 266MHz clock, 16 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 1066MB/s [1.5V signal swing]
AGP 8x: 533MHz clock, 32 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 2.1GB/s [0.8V signal swing], still uses 1.5 volt motherboard power

Now as to the best card for AGP, I think it's the Nvidia 6800GT/Ultra

I can't seem to find anyone that sells the 6800 ultra or GT in the AGP format.

Can you advise as to where to get it in AGP, as I can only find it in PCI-E.

Either that, or a mobo that has PCI-E but takes socket 478 P4 processor.

I HAD an nvidia 6800Ultra AGP card. It was made by eVGA. I guess, try contacting them to see if they have any left.
 
I just got an agp 6800gt but my mom couldnt find any other than at bb, she got raped on teh price, i think she paid around 320 for it. I was like damn i coulda got a 850xt pe card for that price.
