agp or pci express

alright..this is the key question in building my new machine that i will be using for the next few years...i am using this machine to recode dvds watch movies download large files surfing ripping maybe use an autocade, web design, and/or adobe design programs. i already have an ati all in wonder 9600 2006 edition agp card and invested $200 in it. if im not playing games would this card be suitable for my needs, or would it be a good idea to just go pci express and spend maybe 75 - 100 bucks for a descent card (if so, suggestions are appreciated) in case i need the option for the future?...thank u for all the help

AGP would probably be fine for a while still, but if you plan to upgrade later on... Go for PCI Express.

Also, I wouldn't reccomend getting a combo card. Separate cards usally are better...

AGP Video Cards are getting more costly then PCI-E. If you plan on upgrading, you should get PCI-E, it could save you some money in the long run. If you get AGP for your current card, upgrading/replacing would be cosltly.

well first of all, what is the full set up you're looking at, if you're willing to upgrade again in a couple years (probably less) and just use a budget system for now, then your AGP card will do you fine, but remember, AGP is quickly becoming old new, even outlasted by PCI, within the next few years the shit from AGP to PCI-E will become complete.

i do see that you said you were only going to be recoding dvds as well as using Adobe; depending on what you're doing in adobe, you might need a slightly higher end card whether you use AGP or PCI-E, but for nothing too hectic, you're card will do fine. Also, DVD encoding or recoding is more a CPU intensive task then VGA related.

Anyway, within the same budget, here's a much better card, in my opinion:

SAPPHIRE 100106SR-RD Radeon X850XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - $169.99 ($20.00 mail in rebate makes it $149.99)

same memory, higher core clock, 4x the pipelines, its up to you, but i think this is much better bang for your buck then investing in an AGP system, and you'll be upgradeable for the future

that should be "the shift from AGP to PCI-E will become..."
That's what the edit button is for:D

Anyway, if you're not gaming there's no need for a high end card. A cheap 5200, for example, would be fine. If you do want a PCI-E card, the 7600GS would be a good choice at that budget.
