Agp Video Card Query

He guys.

Need some help . I'm looking to buy a video card, however my motherboard only supports cards that are AGP 4X or 8X. Now my question is: I want to buy the geforce 8600 gt or gts. Will my pc be compatible with these cards? and if not whats the 2nd best choice . By the way my computer is quick and good enough to run these things.

CHEERS:cool:

What are the specs of your computer?

There aren't any 8 series cards for an AGP slot, I think there are some 7900's though, they are good cards.

I am running Windows Vista Home Basic on Intel Dual Core 3.2GHz, 1GB RAM, motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-VM800PMC.

If I can't get the 8 Series, what the next best options...

Cheers

Kornowski you keep showing the specs of the cards! That's hardly a precise performance indicator.. look for benchmarks instead. ;)

That 7600gt is good, and while the 7900gs is better i don't know if the price difference is worth it.

I think they do represent performance, if it has a higher spec, then it's going to perform better isn't it... But, Yeah, I could of included some benchmarks.

Mystery card one:

Chipset Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Core clock: 500MHz
DirectX: DirectX 10
DVI: 2
Memory Clock: 1600 MHz (effective)
Memory Interface: 320-bit
OpenGL: OpenGL 2.0
Stream Processors: 96

-------------------------------------------------------

Mystery card two:

Chipset Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Core clock: 710MHz
DirectX: DirectX 10
DVI: 2
Memory Clock: 2000MHz
Memory Interface: 128-bit
OpenGL: OpenGL 2.0
Tuner: None
TV-Out: HDTV / S-Video Out

Looking at this it looks like Mystery card number 2 wins, But surprise, #2 is a 8600gts while #1 is a 8800gts. Alittle over the top but still.. Unless you're comparing two cards using identical cores then the specs don't matter as much.

ATI newest card the 700 million transistor 320 shader processors, 550 mega watt, direct 10 card is supposed to be coming out for AGP in about 5 weeks hope it's not a rumur but a few sites mention this. That means you will have series 8 performance in an AGP computer will have to see if the newest graphics cards push the AGP 8 format to the max. This is the card http://ati.amd.com/products/Radeonhd2900/index.htmlnot good for a low budget but it's needed for direct 10 gaming and games like Oblivion and Armed Assault and crysis, Dirt, window cleaning simulator 2007. I think they will bring out one of scalled down versions that draws less power for agp.

But for cards like the X1950 and the 7950, they are pretty close, so I was showing him some stats, but I can see what you mean...

lol.. you got some of your info wrong. ati new cards are only going to be made for pci-E, and thats not a 550mage watt card... that web site clear say the HD 2900 requirement is a 550 power supply!

i do believe if you did connect a HD2900 to a AGP slot, that may cause a nuclear explosion!
