Alienware...yea or nay?

I'm looking for a laptop that will give me the most bang for my buck around 1000 - 1300 dollars. I want something that will be good for digital media, though i'm not much of a gamer. Longevity is also a concern. Building my own is NOT an option because I am electronically challenged when it comes to anything more than installing RAM.

The two I was looking at are Alienware Area-51 5790 with the basic options and the Gateway CX210X.

I was leaning toward the Alienware, but I have been reading some customer service horror stories that are making me have serious second thoughts. I also can't find many customer reviews on the Gateway, so I feel settling for it would be a shot in the dark.

Should I risk the Alienware CS, or get the Gateway and settle for a less powerful machine? Any and all advice will be extremely appreciated.

How about a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html to start off with and the usual remiinder given to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

From looking over the endless amount of laptops seen I've come to the conclusion that the best is far from either of those two places! First Alienware is about the "highest priced" place to order any custom laptop. You are better off going to Asus if you want anything specific in a custom model. Another place for customizing is found at http://www.mwave.com/mwave/deptNB-CUSTOM.hmx?

For Gateway? Besides being a "cheapie" like some other makes a laptop outdates itself much faster then a desktop(custom that is) due to being limited and generally not upgradable. These are just a few things to consider there before spending too much for ???

I'm using a toshiba satellite with a core 2 and 2gb of memory. Works about as well as anything out there and I only paid $900 for it

I was just looking at IBuyPower computers due to suggestion. It looks like I can get a better deal there. Does anybody have any experience with them? Are they pretty reliable?

No! But I can tun into a local Circuit City or Compusa or some other place and see good deals on store prices like Sony even for what they come with for about $600. That's why looking at what Asus offers was the best mentioned here so far. Just remember a laptop can only be upgraded to a certain amount before...?
