All I want is a fan !!

Hello there

My fan appears/sounds faulty..i asked a chap in a small computer store about it - he hadnt a clue and basically the look he gave me was, 'p-off and let me enjoy my sausage roll mate' - fair enough clearly he doesnt want my money.

Brainwave! i have a old computer in the loft..only about 4 - 5yrs old...the fan..appears the same size...im talking of the larger fan here, the one with the large black 'tube'/casing..not the smaller fan attached to the processor.

SO question is...can i simply unscrew my fan and replace it with this other one...anything to 'worry about' any reason why it wouldnt 'talk' to my newer computer?

Again, aside from processor...the voltage 240ish appears the same and basically all very similar except it has windows xp..

Thoughts please.

Hi there, thanks for the reply...too late ive already taken out etc and sadly the black casing is just a little too long for my current model.

HOWEVER, i have fixed the fan...a bit of pushing on the casing, rescrewing..BUT...i have finally realised the NOISE..a lot of whirring esp on startup...is actually my GRAPHICS CARD. a GEFORCE 240 I THINK...the little fan covered in dust...a heck of a noise it makes.

Its definately this thats making the noise..tried it without fan / with the fan etc etc

SO..question is...my pcu is only 240w...i bought a more uptodate graphics card only to realise it requires 400w ....now..i may..may..install a new power supply...

Can you tell me...clearly my graphics card is crud ( geforce! not sure i recommend them going by the state of the tiny fan!! )..anyone suggest...drivers for my graphics card? to get rid of noise perhaps? any reason...or am i going to bite the bullet and purchase new power supply and graphics card?

GeForce is nVidia's line of graphics cards, and and exceptional, just because you have a 'loud' fan doesn't mean you need to brand a whole series of cards as 'bad'.

The GeForce series are still going strong and currently their flagship model outperforms AMD's competitor.

You state that you have a new graphics card, and that it requires at least a 400w power supply. You need to upgrade this, you will have no end of problems trying to run your new card on a 240w PSU. You shouldn't even attempt it, as if it does fail it can easily take out many other components with it!

You also stated that your fan on your graphics card only operates 'loudly' during startup, this is normal, before Windows has loaded your graphics drivers the fan will operate at 100%.

When in windows there are multiple applications available that let you control your fan speed to eliminate noise, Rivertuner will do this for you, as well as many others.

What is the new graphics card that you have that states you need at least a 400w PSU?

Could you also post the rest of your PC specifications.

Once we know these details we can recommend a suitable power supply for you. :)

Thanks for the reply.. clearly you have shares in Geforce then!!lol

Well, seeing the dust build up in this thing was a real shocker...however..ok will take what you say ..my specs are below..from memory i cant recall the geforce graphics card i bought then took back...basically it had 5 stars for HD editing etc...about £80 ( price reduced slightly ).

I will probably purchase again once i get a new pcu then...been doing a little research.

Its also a case of 4bits of ram now needed..or rather wanted..any recommendations to a decent online store for this.

FINALLY, seeing as you have my specs....i require a DV in/out point. My camcorder - before i purchased a new HD one - has this...my last computer had one installed....ive checked and it seems built onto the motherboard..so not messing with that to pull it off etc

Any recommendations to a store for this..A dv in / out point

thanks
