so still a bit concerned here..

I've been trying to clean up unnecessary startup programs etc.. and in using start run msconfig and diagnostic startup and now in selective startup as usual.. my bottom bar (taskbar) that shows the programs is no longer blue and when a window is open the blue on the left is gone as well.. what the heck?

also tried combo fix .. have been unable to do so.. this last time i tried it my comodo firewall kept popping up so i wen to exit out of it and my computer restarted on its own.. so not sure what the deal is there.. should i even do the combo fix?

well anyway my computer seems to be running at decent speed as of now.. but whats up with the missing blue???????????????? should I be concerned? I like the original appearance better. In some ways it looks more like a safe mode appearance than how it usually does... did I do something wrong... disable something or remove something?

I would say you have a windows corruption problem. I don't see any malware infections. If you can give us a screen shot of what your screen looks like, maybe that would help us.

okay here's my screenshot... the left side is usually contained within a blue box and the bottom taskbar is usually blue as well.. the text also looks basic.. other than that my computer seems to be running pretty well... but this can't be good...

You just have to change your settings is all.

To change the way the icons look under "my computer" back to the way they looked when first installed is you need to do this.

Open "my computer" Right click on an open area and click on "arrange icons by" and make sure "type" has a dot next to it and and that "show in groups" has a check next to it. Other than that those are the only 2 options that need to be checked there.

As far as your windows having different colors then you need to change your theme.

Do this by right clicking on an open area of your desktop and click on properties. And under themes, make sure "windows XP" is in the box.

Let me know if that fixes everything. I'm gonna be gone for a bit but i'll check back later.

my theme options are:

windows classic (modified)
my current theme
windows classic
more themes online...
browse...

(no windows xp theme listed)

Right click on open area on the desktop and click on properties. Click on the appearance tab. Under windows and buttons set it to say "windows XP style". Now go back and see if "windows xp" comes back to the theme menu.

Sounds like windows got messed up then. You might want to think about doing a repair install.

First of all, what kind of computer is this? Do you have an actual windows XP install cd? Or is it a recovery cd?

Microsoft XP
Home Edition
version 2002
service pack 3

e machines
t6410

i did a search for repair install (saw the process with the blue screen process) i'm currently backing up important files to my external harddrive..

I think I see how to do it.. of course any info would be appreciated..

but could i just do a system restore?

If you know what date your computer was working fine then yes. If not, you might want to just think about doing a fresh install since you are backing up all your data.

Yeah, I'm debating whether or not I should wipe it completely clean and start everything over and get rid of the programs that I no longer need and the remnants of past programs etc... could be a process.. but maybe now is about the right time to do it... what do you think?

Then I totally agree that its time to start fresh if there is stuff on there that you don't use anymore and to take care of all your problems at once.
