Im looking for a program that will sit in my taskbar and keep me updated if any new emails show up in whatever free online email host i would use. I dont care about messenging and all that bullshit, i just want to get my emails out of M$ clutches.

I second thunderbird, there is a system tray extension that pops up and lets you know you have emails. It supports the standards as well, IMAP, POP, etc.
