am i allowed to download this game if i already own it?

well 2 months ago i bought final fantasy XI. well my cd had broken today because my brother had steped on it. since i legally own a copy of the cd, is it still illegal for me to download a copy? i really don't want to spend $20 more dollars.
 
Good question, but be careful treading here with those kinds of questions, you might be able to find a cheap copy of the game of Ebay that the seller has lost the key for.
 
thats disapointing....i heard that if you own the game you may have an image of the game in your pc, but i guess im gonna have to waste $20 more dollars then.

Even if you own something its still illegal to download it. They say the same thing with music if you own it or have the cd and its scratched you cannot say well i already own it and go download it. Its illegal no matter how you look at it here in the US.
 
And actually it is a misconception that you "own" any software, music, movies, ect.. That you buy. You are paying for the right to use, play, listen, watch, ect.. Not to "own" it

call the company, they may send you a new cd at a nominal cost, so long as you can prove that you own a real license
 
yup it sure is illegal :). Because your question was answered I'm going to close this thread.

You have done nothing wrong. Asking if it is legal is not wrong. The thread is in a bit of a grey area and could lead to someone posting on downloading of illegal content.

So if it is ok because your question was answered I'll put the thread to bed so that we don't have to worry about it creeping up in the future of someone posting of illegal downloading.
