am i dumb?

My PC Repair teacher said that "your computer will preform as fast as your slowest peice of equipment --------------- if you have a 256MB chip of memory and a 128 chip of the same memory, both chips would be at 128" i didnt want to look stupid and say something infornt of the class and contridict him, but i think that he is bullshitting, 256+128=384, i have run that configuration before, just cause it isnt in binary doesnt mean it doesnt exist..... please tell me im right so i can tell him he's wrong(ps, im the most intelligent person in that class) and show him up.... cause i dont like the fact he's teaching us wrong

that really cant be, if that is so then people would buy a 3.4ghz processor and have memory that runs at 533mhz, that would mean the comp ran at 533mhz. Which i find hard ot beleive.

my sentiments exactly... knew i was right.... cause there is stuff like 384 and 768.... just cause it isnt binary doesnt mean it doesnt exist in a computer

he's right. i explain it a bit in RAM 101 but the idea is that computers like to be synchronized ... and in order to maintain the synchronosity (if thats even a word), they all have to operate at a common speed ... now it'd be nice if they could all operate at the speed of the fastest unit but thats not possible ... so they all operate at the speed of the slowest unit.

Now to elaborate what your teacher said is "the RAM will work at the slowest common RAM-speed" -- not that "the system will work as slow as slow as if you only had 128MB" of RAM

So yeah, at the end of the day, teacher was right -- he was talking about the speed of the chip -- not the size of the chip (read your own quote again)

nonononono, he was talking about haveing like, 2 chips of PC100, one 256 one 128, and only both running at 128 to total 256... not the diffrence in speed...

256 + 128 always = 384... Thats all there is to it... Now as far as speed... Yes, if 1 chip is PC100 and the other is PC133, they will both run at 100, but that doesn't affect the amount of ram, just the speed.

Well maybe u misunderstood him because its kinda wierd that somebody that clueless can teach a computer class.

Well if that is what he meant put it on computer stupiditys lol.

BUt thats not what you said.
your computer will preform as fast as your slowest peice of equipment

the only thing that your teacheer said right was that your memory will only run as fast as the slowest chip (ex PC2100 and PC3200). But 256mb+128mb doesnt equal 128, and on my old comp i had a 512MB and a 256MB stick, and i didnt get only 256mb ram. lol

The slowest SPEED... The second half is what makes him either an idiot, or you mis-quoted him... He will probably say you mis quoted him..

true.. you can see a computer as a bottle.

you fill it with water.. and if you want to empty it.. the speed of the water flowing out depends on te thinkness of the neck. no matter how big the bottle is. ;)

so if you have slow RAM in your pc. lets say pc133 DDR, and 1 stick pc3200 DDR, you will have to set the memory speed to 133MHz,.. because otherwise the pc133 wont work.

That's what the teacher meant, the speed is what he was talking about. "It will go as fast as your slowest peice of equipment."

you'd be surprised. im in PC Maintenance class right now...:P

128MB PC2100 cannot run as fast as 256MB PC3200, BUT they still equal 384MB PC2100.

yeah but then doesn't pci devices run at 33mhz, or something like that, it doesn't mean that your pc is running at the frequency.

I'm probably just understanding you wrong lol

he could have meant a bottleneck in your computer. which makes "It will go as fast as your slowest peice of equipment." absolutely true.

your PC is only as good as its weakest part. It doesnt matter if you've got a 4GHz CPU and 2GB of RAM...if you're running a 9200 gfx card it will suck in games. it doesnt matter if you've got a 7800GT, if you;ve got 256MB PC2100 and a slow processor it will suk at multi tasking.

i know that, buuuuut, he contridicted himself the other day, he said "i guess it could be true, "384"MB will be a little better then 256 because of the size diffrence" .......... ****ing dumbass..... lol
