Am I just being old fashioned?

Or are laptops no longer sold with latches to secure the lid closed!?

Both my HP ProBook and Acer Aspire just need to be pulled to open, rather than having a physical catch that needs to be released.

Yes this is fine for me as I never take the laptops out of the house, but I would imagine that for users who carry their laptops around a lot it could be an issue.

It depends on the model. My personal laptop (circa 2012) has no latch, nor does the one (circa 2014) my SO uses. However, my work one (2013) does.

I actually find the ones with a latch to be a PITA. I'd rather not have to undo a latch to open it. Unless the hinge has lost all of it's friction, there's little chance of the lid opening by accident.

I too remember laptops with latches, I moved on to desktops and didn't have a laptop for years. When I did buy another laptop it was a long time before I even noticed it didn't have a catch and I haven't had any problems with laptops opening themselves, only laptops with hinges so loose they close themselves. The way most people carry and handle laptops there's little to no opportunity to open themselves. Its very hard to carry a laptop in a way it could open itself if closed, you would need to hold only the bottom and the sides, keeping in mind that some of the side will be the screen, so only the sides of the main body and then you would need to consciously not put your opposable thumbs on top of the screen, which would normally be a natural, comfortable and secure way to grasp the laptop. If you are traveling with a laptop it would most likely will be in a bag if you don't want it damaged or you could put it under your arm, both ways it isn't going to force its way open. I believe it would need be some unusual and extenuating circumstances for a laptop to open itself that I personally haven't come across in over 20 years of using them.

Why would it be an issue? They don't randomly open up, as there is a decent amount of force needed to open them. With laptops as thin as they are now, it's just not practical to have latches.
