AM2 Processors?

"Socket AM3 processors are able to run on Socket AM2 and AM2+ motherboards with appropriate bios updates"

Does this mean that a Socket AM3 Processor can be placed in a Socket AM2 slot and run correctly?

As in I could buy a computer with a Socket AM2 slot, buy a Socket AM3 Processor, and it will run correctly?

Thanks,

Yes, a socket AM3 processor will work in Socket AM2/AM2+
Would only support DDR2 RAM though, instead of DDR3, when doing this
and I don't think you would be able to take advantage of HyperTransport-3 (not sure about this one)

Will the speed be affected or would it run at the same speed as it would in an AM3 Socket?

Speed shouldn't be affected, the main thing is RAM. Since Socket AM3 is the first to introduce DDR3, only DDR2 will be compatible with an AM3 chip in Socket AM2/AM2+

Wrong info given there. Not all am2 boards will support the am3 processor or maybe only a select few, all depends on BIOS update to support it.

aren't am2 95w too? idk why i think that, but if they are then not all am3 cpus would work even if supported.

in no way did i mean ALL would work, sorry for the misinformation
Depending on your motherboard, socket AM2 is able to support AM3 chip. (with BIOS support)
This is a technology AMD was quite proud to release, backward compatibility

Edit: OK wait a year or so and all will, that's better

No, not all Socket AM2 were 95W. Alot of AM2 didnt support AM2+ or AM3 processors. Mostly to do with lacking power setup or had a smaller 4Mbit bios that could not handle the update.

it depends on the motherboard really, i ordered a Asus crosshair 2 formula. now this supports AM3 socket CPUs but only Phenom 2 made with 45NM technology. so it wont support FX or any other AM3 sock CPUs.

i only used this motherboard as an example, so support will vary on manufacturers :)

It solely depends on your motherboard/BIOS support. And sorry for asking StrangleHold, but does the BIOS capasity not depend on your CMOS chip? not the CPU, right? I mean I realize its on the BIOS chip but it's ROM right? Thanks for the input. Something I never had to encounter on my exams and need to learn. I absolutely despise wiki
To be completely honest this is far from the IBM PS/2 Model 30 I learned on. The true desktop, Thanks

Can someone tell me whether or not this computer can support AM3? I need to know which processor I should order.

No it won't. Only supports certain am2 processors. With it being HP, I'm surprised it supports that many.

The tower and desktop case supports the same processors.

If it was an actual branded motherboard, you may have had a chance.

Depends on the game really. If your hardware surpasses the minimum requirements then should do well.

No, what I mean is what kind of games can I expect to play on a decent FPS?

As in could I play games like BF3 and Skyrim? (Just examples) And what could I play them on, like High or Ultra High or Low? I just wanted to know what to expect.

It's going to have 4 GB of RAM at first, 8 Soon though
A 550Ti or 6950
The CPU I said earlier.

on like bf3 probably get lower to mid settings at 1080p if the processor can do it, idk there though. i know the graphics are up to it though.
