AM2... review

K8L is out, its AM2.
Since you say K8L is out, how come we don't have Quad core processors? And, where's the:

*DDR3 support
*SSE4 instruction support
*L3 cache

No current AMD processor has any of these features. How come you may ask? Because these are features of the K8L processor, which doesn't come out for another few months. The K8 architecture is still being used by AMD, even in Socket AM2.

i'll agree with you there, but when you look at the intel counterparts (at least in dual core, i don't know as much about single core processors) to amd processors, intel always seems way ahead in terms of core processing speed/power. And yet, because of amd's more advanced technology (hyper transport, advanced memory controller, etc) they're much more efficient and come out on top 90% of the time when it comes to games and single high end multi-threaded applications. Although intel is better in a multi-threaded non-gaming environment, i think that the performance difference is realistically unnoticable. All the processors out there right now (those above entry level and several below) have the capability to handle the multitasking needed by the majority of users. If you're exceptional, however, that's where exceptional processors come into play. When i see how much amd quad core costs compared to conroe ill make my definite choice, but if they're remotely similar in pricing im going to hit up newegg for the first K8L i can get my hands on!
Mate you sound like george bush there.. you said like 200 words when you could have said what u were trying to in about 10! ;P

to sound like george bush i'd have to be able to say 200 words without actually saying anything :P

i thought AM2 was the K8L and the K9 was the DDR3 and such

nah, its how clutch said, am2 processors right now are still using k8 architecture and 90nm technology, next year is when k8l comes out, using 65nm architecture, and all the other goodies that clutch mentioned

well what happens when the new chips come out, another new motherboard socket? or will they just design the 65nm processors to fit into AM2. and what about the DDR3 because AM2 doesnt support it, will AMD be behind another 2 years?

the k8l is for am2, thats why they had to make a new socket
The K8L is not AM2. K8L is AMD's next generation architecture that is going to be available sometime during 2007.

i meant quad core will be am2 compatible, i didnt mean they were one and the same

this current generation of am2 chips is just a testbed, quad-core will have improved cache and memory controller technologies which will be able to fully harness ddr2 memory and negate (at least partially) the lost of speed from the higher latencies, its on the amd roadmap, let me see if i can find it...
