AM2 the way?

AM2 is a socket. Go for AM2 since it's the newer socket, but the only difference between AM2 and 939 is that AM2 supports DDR2.

Pretty much, there's a new retention device so you'll have to buy a HSF specifically for AM2 unless you use stock, but I've heard that some people could still use there 939 HSF on AM2.

really? is that the only difference?

Its the only main difference worth knowing. It is also good to know that it will be easier to upgrade with AM2 in the future. When skt 939 is discontinued it will be hard to upgrade, this probably wont be for a while though.

amd X2 series for 939 only goes up to 4800+, for am2 it goes to 5000+. Also am2 goes to fx-62 and 939 only goes to fx-60.

Koop, did you not bother to look two topics down, and see "939 and AM2" ?

Seriously, you should look a bit more before posting a question...

anyways... i'd wait for conroe (comes out july 23rd), or K8L in 2k7
even when conroe is released it will be much better to buy an AMD because they'll drop in price by a lot.
