AM3 and AM2 compatibilty?

I would assume that AM3 socket processors could be used with AM2 socket motherboards, but will you be able to use DDR3 memory or not?

Why would you assume that? Socket 939 and AM2 are basically identical(one pin difference) but they aren't compatible. No clue about DDR3...

seems like more of a chipset/feature set change than an actual socket change as we know and love

DDR3? erm... dont just grafic's cards use that? (and doesnt it have incredibly high latency's then? :x ) besides the point... AM2 is just released..the first time AMD uses DDR2, so i gues it'll take some time before they would go to DDR3 (If they would do it in the first place)

back end '07 or early '09 AM3 is expected to roll out

Yea thats the same I heard, that AM2+ will support HT 3.0 then AM3 will jump to DDR3, both is suppost to be backward comp. to AM2 boards but its up to the board maker if they release a bios update, bet they would really like to sell a new board!!
