AMD Athlon 64 3800+ x2 or Intel Celeron E1200?

Reason - Bro's multiuse computer...

Question - Which is better? Some proof to back up your statement would help.

For the Google guys - Been there done that.

Intel Celeron E1200 Processor is likely a little slower than the 65 Watt AMD Athlon X 2 3800+ Socket AM2 Processor. The Athlon runs at 2 gigahertz clock speed while the Celeron only runs at 1.6 gigahertz. Both processors have the same amount of cache.

If he is planning to keep this motherboard and just upgrade his processor later it may be better to go with Socket LGA 775 as he can get a better processor later.

If I had a choice between the two processors I would pick the AMD Athlon 3800+ processor.

It'zza whole new computer.

Monitor, computer, speakers, mouse, keyboard.

$500 budget. Wants to play BF2 at max settings.

What'cha say? Possible?

My only complaint against many pre-manufactured systems nowadays is all the advertising junk software they load on with the Windows Operating System. Be sure you format the whole hard drive if you decide to go that route and reinstall Windows.

I have an Athlon X2 3800+ and it hasn't let me down in a long time. I can run COD4 maxed with it (with most of the help out of the HD3870 of course ;)) I would say the Athlon X2 would win gaming-wise big time over the Celeron Dual Core.

The AMD X2 3800 has twice the amount of L1 and L2. The E1200 has 32+32kb. X2 of L1 and a total of 512kb. L2. The AMD has 64+64kb of L1 X2 and 512+512kb total of 1mb. of L2

My mistake. When reading the specifications on the Intel Celeron E1200 I read the Level 2 cache at 512 kilobytes but assumed it was 512 kilobytes X 2.

I AM going to overclock....

I would just go with a cheap pre-build and throw in a 7600gt graphics card. It just might be better than building it yourself.

Powerspec PC
$400

7600GT
$60 after MIR

And leaves you the rest of the money to pick up some cheap CRT monitor somewhere.

Nope, has to be LCD, with speakers, keyboard, and laser mouse ;)

And I did that. E1200, motherboard, 7300GS, ect.

Even a nice pair of Logitech speakers and a 19" Widescreen. 80GB, 2GB DDR2-800, a fair Rosewill case, ect.

So basically the actual computer itself would cost about $375, hm. My friend's 6200 played bf2 low/med settings with like 40 fps, sooo a 7300GS is going to have some trouble maxing it out. Heck, my old x850pro even had trouble maxing it out. If your brother wants any type of gaming experience, at LEAST get a 7600GS.

isnt the celeron only single core? and the amd duel?

Celeron E1200 is dual core processor. It is the first dual core celeron

EDIT: and it is based on core 2 architecture, the only difference is that it have 512MB cache memory. So, you can say it is a Core 2 Duo with 512MB cache if you want

The first of anything isn't always the best of anything. Wait for improvements.
AMD has always had a good name in gaming circles, but then so has Most Intel chips, this does not include Celeron tho. The name Celeron makes me think of Celery, yes that's what they should've called it, the Intel Celery - breaks under pressure, lol.

I would say, with these two options go AMD all the way!

E1200 as you can overclock

Oh so you can overclock the Celery, I mean Celeron sorry. That's probably why Intel make them so slow, just so that the user has to overclock, to get them anywhere respectful.

Just so you know the AMD also can(believe it or not), be overclocked. It also has a better Clock speed to start with. So OCing this beaut should OC better than the Celery.

Just for instance my friend has the 4000+ X2 which is only 100Mhz faster than the 3800+ X2. He is using the Coolermaster Sphere(sweet Cooler for CPU), and he OCed his to 3.0Ghz, with the CPU running at the same temp as with the standard heatsink and fan. His CPU score on 3DMark05 jumped up by about 2000pts.

This celeron chip is a core 2 duo with less cache, dont be put off by the name, its a core 2 duo in disguise, just like the duel core pentiums,

I went from an amd 3800 to a pentium 2160 1.8 GHz model, and it is SOOOOO much better.

I have found out personally that an amd duel core processor needs and extra 1.2 GHz to get same results as the slower clocks of intel, with the same amount of cache (super pi time and css fps is what ive tested)
