I wan to upgrade my processor from an AMD 64 3200+ Sckt 939 to an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego Sctk 939. However, I'm a novice when it comes to computers so I'm not entirely sure if it will work with my current motherboard. I have an ASUS A8V-Deluxe Sckt 939 MOBO. I'm thinking that yeah there both 939 sockets but I don't have a lot of money so I want to be sure.

Also what the hell is the "San Diego" thing on the CPU? I try serching for info the the internet but still I have not clue. Oh and also I was thinking about installing a new hard drive on my computer a SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive. However, I have never intalled a "SATA" drive only the old IDE. Is it anymore difficult to install??

Thanks...

That processor will switch out fine.

As for installing an SATA HD, it's a breeze. It's easier than IDE. No jumpers to set, smaller easier to move and plug in cables, etc.

considering doing exactly the same thing myself, i too have a 3200+ and an asus A8v deluxe, just never got round to doing it.

let me know on what the performance change is like :)

I also have a 3200+, but OCed to 3800+ speed. I couldnt get it to 4000+ levels. And yes, SATA is much easier.

Well I'm doing this now cause my HD craped out on me on Saturday (Segate IDE 300GB). My computer can't detect the HD and when I put it in an eclosure kit and hook it up to my notebook it can't detected either.

So I figure that I would sell the new HD that I would get from Segate (still under warranty) and get a SATA. And since the price for CPU's had seriously decline I figure I'd do it while I'm at it. I've also been noteceing that my game are a bit slugish and figure this would be a great boost.

As far as overclocking to 3800+ levels that is too advance for me (I'm a novice). Yeah, I'll let you guys know how the upgrade goes. Although it might take me a while to get all the parts since I'm a starving student.

UPDATE...

Just got the parts today and so far nothing is going as plan. Installing the CPU was a easy. However, when I pluged in the computer the screen was completely black... I think my CPU might be DOA. I reinstalled my old 3200+ and I could see my BIOS again.

Then I tried to install windows on my OEM SATA HD. The blue windows screen said that it could not detect the HD. I though installing a SATA HD was supposed to be easy. I'm intalling Windows XP with SP1 so it should not be giving me such a difficulty. Well I'll keep u guys up to date after I vent some frustration.

Think that board has a VIA chipset, I dont fool with VIA chipsets much, you might have to use the F6 option when installing to load your Sata drivers, As far as the CPU, some boards are stuborn mabe try resetting the bios and try again?

UPDATE 2...

Yes, I do think that I have to hit the F6 and install those drivers. However, I don't know where to get the drivers nor do I have a floppy drive. I contacted Seagate and I'm waiting to see what they say.

For now I'm using my old AMD 64 3200+ to install windows first. Then I hope when I get the computer running to download any updates for my MoBo in hopes that in that way it will finaly recognize my new AMD 64 4000+.

It's killing me since I was hoping to play battlefield 2142 tonight.

well, actually you cant get your 3200 to act at 3800 speed, if your talking about 3800 dual core... two cores going as fast as your core...
