So I'm trying to build this computer right and I've configured everything, put all the pieces together and when i go to power it on, the fans and lights on the computer come on for like a second and then shutsoff. Any idea what might cause this?

Thats a very common problem, and there can be a few causes. First, make sure your motherboard is sitting on the small gold leg-screws (sometimes their silver), DO NOT have your motherboard screwed directly into the case, this can cause it to short out.

If thats not the problem, make sure all the cables, cards, cpu, ram, and everything else is securely in place.

Are you using the 24-Pin cable and the 4-Pin cable? If you forget to use the 4-Pin this problem may occur.

Or it could mean you have a dead PSU or motherboard.

In my experience it sounds like you might have a dead board, I've had tons of asus boards do that to me. Really raised my blood presure!!

Or it might have already been damaged because you put it one without the standoffs. Or it could be your PSU. Even a small thing like your fan being plugged into a sensor on the motherboard wrong can do this. Eliminate each problem one at a time, until you just have the motherboard, processor and memory plugged in.

I thought that maybe i did the system panel connector wrong. There's a layout in the mobo book on how to do it and that's way different if i go by colors. So I put them in by the right colors and it didn't turn on at all. put them in by the layout and the fans and lights turn on for a second then it goes off. Could this be the problem?

You could very well have shorted out the mobo when you installed it without the standoffs, as has been suggested. It looks like you could be buying yourself a new one.

Why should they? It was your screwup. No offence. I just take exception to that as a dealer, because it ends up being me that pays for it in the end... Know what I mean?
