AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200 vs. Pentium D

I am thinking about going with either a

AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200

OR

Pentium D 820 2.8 GHz

What are the good and bad about both and what would you recommend???

Many people on Newegg also complain of how hot the Pentium D's run, and that the stock cooling is hardly adequate.

X2 3800+ is the competitor to the 820 nothing else. The 3800+ will win most tests just at a worse price/performance ratio.

The 820 however is a cheap route to go if you want a dual core chip.

And you find these people trust worthy reviewers? :)
Temperature vise I wouldn't say they run hot.

my question is regarding the 3800 x2 vs 4200 x2. is the performance between the two significantly different to justify the price difference? cuz i plan on getting one of them just not exactly sure which one to go out for

If you're going to over-clock it then the X2 4200 is better because you get some play with the clock multiplier (9,10, and 11). With good quality memory the 4200 should be able to hit 2.7 Ghz.

The posts stating that the X2 beats Intel's dual cores in just about everything are right, including video encoding and that's at stock speed. The AMD's X2's are excellent for over-clocking which really pushes them out in front. I've been eying the X2 4400 for some time now, wondering how far I can over clock it. If I can get it close to 2.8 Ghz would be like having dual FX57's.

i'd say get the 4200. like sophocles said, for the price you can get the clock pretty high, and it's not that much more than a 3800. although i've had a good time overclocking my 3800, and i've barely even made it sweat at 2.2

I've got a buddy that hit 2.6+ with the 3800. He sacrificed a bit in memory performance by getting stuck with a 2T command rate. That being said with a clock multiplier of 10 you should be able to hit 2.4 without breaking a sweat and 2.5 is very likely.

The AMD X2 4200+ beats the Pentium D 2.8Ghz at virtually anything you can through at it.
Well duh, the 4200 is better paired against the 840.

The 830 actually :)

My 4200 will OC higher but the 3800 runs so much cooler (idling at 26C) which is disturbing because i didnt think there'd be that much of a difference for 200MHz.

I wouldnt bother the 1MB cache but hey, it's you're money bud :) As for 2.80GHz, gimme a few weeks and I'll let you know.

Of course for video encoding, 2T isnt really an issue, the point is to avoid the HDD :)
