AMD ATHLON 64 X2 6400 Cooling?

Good morning everyone.

I built my first system a few months ago for my kids. After having it a couple of months, it started shutting down on its own. I called in a local company to look it over. It turned out to be that it was simply overheating. He added some thermal paste between the CPU and supplied heatsink and that seems to have taken care of the problem. (It was an ASUS A8N-SLI and a AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU.) I didn't add any extra paste because it the directions didn't call for any.

I'm getting ready to build another system for myself, so I have a question. I'm going to use an ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe with an AMD ATHLON 64 X2 6400+. Would it be advisable to add extra thermalpaste or even go so far as to add an other heatsink/cooler? This is just going to be my second build, so I'm not real sure of these things. Would appreciate any input. Thanks. Gary

Wait, so you didnt have any thermal paste between the two when you built your first computer?

If you're using the stock heatsink and fan it should come with a pad pre-applied, although for better cooling performance you can get an aftermarket heatsink and fan, as well as better thermal compound.

I would wait and look what temperatures the CPU is running at once you get the pc.
the thermal pad/paste used on heatsinks need some time to set in fully too, so use it for a few days would be my suggestion. if the temps are ok, there is no need to worry, if it is shutting down, I'd look weither it is the airflow in the case beeing low (aka, not enough cool air is getting to the CPU heatsink) or indeed, the heatsink cant get the heat away from the processor fast enough. :)

No, I said I didn't add any EXTRA paste because it didn't call for it in the directions. AMD processors come with a square area of paste from the factory.

If you are familiar with this setup, what aftermarket heatsink would you recommend?

for a M2N CPU? I would suggest the Zalman 9500 (there is a version wich only fits M2N/s939 CPU's, its a black heatsink), wich is cheaper than the regular one.

Thats what I thought, and no you dont want to add any because too much is not a good thing.

I'm familiar with aftermarket cooling, but because I dont have or never had an AM2 processor, I can't say which ones are better or not. Although you may want to have a look here: http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g40...ng-CPU_HeatsinksCoolers-Socket_AM2-Page1.html

I got the Zalman 9700 LED. I got to a stable 3.1 GHz, and could've gotten higher if it weren't for my mobo. Pretty pricey tho for someone not planning on ocing.

No thermal paste should not cause that much overheating... My 1.3GHz @ 1.43GHz CPU had no thermal paste, even after overclocking it for an year. Temps never went over 35C. My old Slot 1 400MHz was at 566MHz with no thermal paste and was at roughtly around 45C...
