Question?
What would be a good but fairly cheap cooler for the cpu. Thinking to upgrade
to the "AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor".
I have the 5200+ Windsor 65W now. Just changing out cpu's, nothing else.

it wouldnt be that huge of a jump in performance. if you overclock the 5200+ its just as good as the 6400+

I doubt that. There is a huge difference between a 6400+ and a 5200+. Although a 5200+ is a nice overclocker, still I would consider buying a 6400+ and sell the 5200+.

i would recommend the 6400+ if it wasnt 90nm and didnt run so ridiculously hot, and you can easily overclock the 5200+ to match the 6400+

Yeah but it won't survive for long... It doesn't mean that when you have the same speed as the 6400+ that they are equal to each other.

If you want to stick with AMD screw the 6400. Save some more money up get a AM2+ board and upgrade to something like a 9750. The 90nm. are being discontinued. In 2 or 3 months you will have a discontinued, outdated, runs warm, not all that much faster than my 5200 what the hell did I do that for processor.

You've got a point.

I agree that you should stick it out and wait for a quad-core setup of some kind, as the performance increase won't be a monumentous one.

I would take a 6400+ over a 5200+ anyday, that's a no-brainer. I agree that an overclocked 5200+ does not equal a stock 6400+, for more than one reason.

Thanks for all the replies, but since I am on a set income, I can not upgrade to new board or anything pass the 6400. Built my machine in Nov of 2007, when I had a little money then. Thinking of putting the 5200 in my nephews machine since he has a sempron 3400 in his. his board will handle the 5200. But, I would like to find out what coolers are the best for the 6400. I have the standard heat sink that came with the 5200.
Since I don't want to redesign my machine All I want to know is about a cooler that will handle the 6400+

It would be better to go Intel if he plans to buy a new motherboard

Well, thanks for all the replies. But my question was not answered. The whole thing was about a "Cooler" for the 6400. Not to go about redesigning my computer.

Thanks for all the replies, but I am not redesigning my whole machine. Just thinking about the 6400+. You all suggested to buy Intel. I just wanted to know about a "Cooler" for the 6400+. I made my decision on the 6400+. Like my other post says. I do not have the money for redesigning the machine.

I use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185125&Tpk=freezer+64+pro

Keeps my X2 4400+ at 28c idle 34-38 on high load in a 85F room and this is with the fan in the wrong direction (can go on both ways)
Its suppose to support up to the phenom series so might wanna read the reviews see if anyone else reports temps on their 6400+

Once I get my new 8800GT I will put it in the right position and I expect the load temps to drop to 32-34c with it working with my cases air flow.

There's no point in upgrading the CPU, the performance gain would be so ridiculously small that you'd be WAY better off just saving up for a new build. Also, as said, the 6400+ runs bloody hot, and you'll have to get a new HSF anyway (also, the 6400+ is an old stepping)... if you're sure you want to upgrade, have it your way, but I - and supposedly everyone else - would suggest you to save up. The cost of a 6400+ and a new HSF would cover a nice chunk of cash needed for a new build, and - let me repeat this - the performance gain would be so insignificant that you'd probably smack yourself over your head as soon as you have upgraded.

Thank you for all the replies. You talk me out of it. I will not be getting the 6400+. But still might be getting a better cooler for my machine.

I give my vote for the Arctic Cooling Freezer---keeps my AMD x2 5000+ BE at around 17-20 at idle-and that's after it's been on all day
