Hi, i dont know a whole lot about computer hardware so i need your help.
here is a website about my motherboard and i was wondering if you guys could tell me what is the best cpu on this page that would fit my motherboard.

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?...od_no=505&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=#menu

I know its kinda outa date but it will have to work for me for now.i have the athlon xp 2400+ but i see some higher number ones on there and want to know what i should use as afar as games.
thanks

It says on the main page a Athlon XP 2800 but in the CPU look up it says a Athlon XP 3000 with a 333 FSB, I would say the XP 3000 with a bios update.

as far as games? dont expect this rig to run many newer games, but i think it'll be ok for games made before '05 as for the rest, i think strangleholds right

You will have to try EBay at this time to try and locate a Socket A model since most vendors cleared those out and see the 754 models as the oldest. A pair of 512mb PC2700 dimms for a 1gb total and one of the last and newest AGP cards with some driver support still found would be needed there. You would far better off putting the money you spend if found trying to update that system towards a newer updated one.

definetely your money would be much better spent buying a new motherboard, ram, cpu, and video card.

Here the need for a board with two ide channels and 3 pci slots ended up seeing one model board chosen with only 2 pci slots The only model found with 3 only has one ide channel. That won't work for having an ide hard drive running along with two ide optical drives. When XP as a primary OS is long gone and there's no need for driver floppies to install Windows on sata drives like Vista and beyond(Vienna better? hopefully) Then the 3 pci slot would no longer be needed then either. This is seen on AM2 boards now. A look at newegg lately shows that they no longer seem to have 754 boards in stock? or simply will no longer stock them. Every 3 or 4 years plan a new build to stay somewhat? updated.

There are all kinds of 939 models with two ide channels but few for AM2. Try and find an Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, or Abit model with two ide channels, 3 pci slots, and four dimm slots for example. The closest seen was one model with 3 pci slots and one ide channel or the Asus M2N-E SLI board with two ide and 2 pci to supplement the 8gb capacity there. A board like Asrock or ECS doesn't fit the bill here.

Most of the 754s seen there are micro atx with SIS or VIA chipsets. For a good budget build to upgrade a look at the newer 939/AM2 or Intel models would be far better since prices have come down on those. In fact some new DX 1o cards are found cheaper then the 7950 or X1950 lines of DX9 cards.

1. You said in post 6 (The only model found with 3 only has one ide channel) Thats not true!
2. You said in post 6 (A look at newegg lately shows that they no longer seem to have 754 boards in stock? or simply will no longer stock them.) Thats not true!

When looking through the various AM2 type boards none with 3 pci slots by the manufacturers mentioned earlier were found. Have any links for those with two ide channels, 3 pci slots, and four memory slots to post?

The bulk of the models seen are micro atx and not full sized boards. When looking to click on the AM2 option for boards lately the one for 754 wasn't seen. Why? ask newegg there. They keep changing their pages and although odd at the time I was focused on browsing AM2 models.

The Socket As are gone for sure! When looking for a replacement cpu for an old case here it seems EBay will be the likely place to look.

With only micro atx models seen for the most part and newer boards coming out sooner or later? I wouldn't count on seeing too many of those much longer there. You will also note that MSI had no listing for the XP3400s seen only on older CompaQ systems. Special ordered pre oced XP3200s running at 2.3ghz makes a prebuild look better in those days with the seemingly faster cpu. With the locked multiplier seen on the old build here you could just reach 2.3ghz when trying to oc one from the stock 2.205ghz. Newegg sold the few they had fast to clear those out before replacing the old 3200 here as well as the FX-60 939 model.

i dunno why he keeps going on about socket a, but cut him some slack, and stop biting his ankles on every mistake will ya?
