AMD Ditching 1MB L2 Cache

I'm not sure if any of you have heard this or not, but AMD has stopped producing the X2 series with 1MB of L2 cache, so thats the reason why you don't see the X2 4800+'s, or the other models with L2 cache. The reason is because the extra L2 cache takes up more space, thereby decreasing the amount of CPU's produced per wafer. They also stopped production because consumers were getting really confused with the different variations.

So now the only models that still have 1MB of L2 cache are some of the Opteron's, as well as the FX series.

Do any of you have opinions on this? I think it will actually increase Opteron and FX sales, since now theres even more of a significant difference between the X2 and the FX series.

Yeah

That's a good point actually. It's exactly the reason. The extra L2 cache has a minimum impact on performance and therefore is not worth the hassle for AMD to produce. The FX series will therefore remain more competitive for the enthusiast market ;)

That's not really good, 512k isn't always enough for a lot of demanding taks people do these days. Did they cut even the AM2 versions of this too?

I believe they cut it out on all of the AMD X2 series, both 939 and AM2.

I'm not sure if they cut it out on the Athlon 64 line though.

I think it's a good move, since i'm guessing people are chosing X2's over FX series (atleast i am), simply because it's not worth the price, especially when all you're getting is unlocked upward multipliers for couple hundred bucks. This way, they'll be another difference between the two chips and maybe will draw more people to the FX line.
