i am a little confused on some of the newer amd processors.

first of all, are ALL athlon 64's dual core?

if no then which ones are?? (x2's, fx's?)

also what is the best core you can get in regards to all around preformance?(multitasking and gaming?)

thanx alot

Standard amd 64 are single core
With the X2 suffix means dual core
With FX suffix is means (for the moment) single core

The AMD Athlon X2's are the best in all-round performance that you seek. However, equally so, they are quite more expensive than their single core brethren.

JAN :D

As jan said, the X2 is the best for all around performance, especially since it has dual-cores. Although if you dont want to spend $400+, then you can buy a single cored Athlon 64, which is still very good for gaming.

Lastly, for dual-core oriented readers, there is a question of Athlon64 X2 or Pentium D/EE, a few comments

* Again, if your budget can support it, the Pentium Extreme Edition is superior to the Pentium D
* For gaming, the Athlon64 X2 will clearly give you better performance
* If you plan on firing up lots of threads within a single application (say Photoshop, Lightwave, 3D SMAX etc), the Athlon64 X2 is the premier processor to get. If you plan on firing up lots of threads across several applications (say Photoshop and Lightwave simultaneously), the Pentium EE is the processor to get
* Performance-wise there isnt much reason to consider the Pentium D however it should not be ruled out entirely since it has the very nice characteristic of being a somewhat affordable dual-core processor

right here.

The opteron 165 runs at 1.8 ghz, but ive seen it Oced to 2.6Ghz with 1Mb L2 Cache per core. its about 300 and it was Oced with the AMD stock cooler. as long as you get a good mobo for overclocking a sub 300 dual core opteron is the best dualcore in production.

He means relative to a Pentium D/EE

yeah, i missed that part.

but it also says that future games will probably be multithreaded, so in the near future it may be better to go with a dual core????

If you are an overclocker go with the Opteron 165 dual core! It is only $300, 1.8ghz, 1MB cache and heres the best part, IT OVERCLOCKS TO 3ghz!
