Hey guys! First off, this is my first post so take it easy ;P

Next, let me start off by letting you guys no I just finished my first computer build! It went a lot better than I thought! Here is my setup if anyone wants to creative it.
-Case - Corsair 300R
-Mobo - ASUS M5A97 R2.O
-CPU - AMD FX-8350 BLACK
-RAM- CRUCIAL 8GB
-GPU - ASUS HD5450
-COOLER- HYPER 212
-OPTICAL -MSI 24X DVD BURNER
-SSD - SAMSUNG 128 GB PR0 2.5
-HARDDRIVE- SEAGATE BARACUDA 1TB @ 7200

I build the rig with no intentions for gaming, just media. Streaming movies/TV, while running Photoshop. Basically a media machine. But the more I think about it the more I would love to play some far cry 3 on my rig! So the graphics card will be replaced soon! (Any suggestions).

Anyways back to the reason I am even posting here.....The hardest thing for me to grasp is how all the drivers work. Once I put everything all together and got my OS on and running I needed to install drivers. I just used the CD that came with the motherboard and GPU for updates. They both had me install a bunch of software. What I don’t get is how do you know you’re up to date? If you go to the manufactures web site how do you know which ones to download? Is all on the software that came in the CD?

The most difficult driver I am having is with the GPU (HD5450) it came with AMD Catalyst™ software but every time I download it, the software will not open up? I will click on it to open, the computer will think for a min and then nothing happens? I have tried to completely uninstall the software and just download it from the web site. The last shot I gave it was actually able to completely download and take me to the AMD registration web site. But after that I still can’t open the software. I am using a HDMI so I have black bands around my screen and the clarity is all messed up!

I know I am all over the place, but I would love for someone to shed some light on my situation! Anybody have the same graphics card?

Thanks in advance! :D

Plus, if you are going for another graphics card (let's say HD 7870 or the GTX series), please be sure that you delete/update the drivers accordingly.

1. Once you get the latest software/drivers, the application will automatically let you know of the driver updates. At least that has been my experience.
2. You don't need to install everything on the CD (like, some random softwares you don't really need, don't bother with them). Install only the ones you need ie. drivers itself, and the Catalyst + depending on the card's brand, it's got some 3rd party softwares like MSI Tweak or something which will help you monitor your clock speed, temp, etc...
3. Could you please let us know "how" the application is failing to load? Like, any specific error messages?

I never install from disc most of the drivers will be out of date, I would only use the disc to install lan drivers if i did not have another machine available.

Here is the download link for your board, just select the os you are using.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/#support_Download

This may sound stupid, I am just trying to learn. But when I select my OS it tells me I have 55 files found. Does this mean I need to download all 55? Also I have tryed to download them, What do you do with them when they are downloaded? Do I have to put them in a specific location on my SSD?

Thanks again for helping a "noob"

I wish I would remember what it was telling me when it was failing...I think something about not being able to locate the files?

I cant even open the software to manage the GPU :( When I go to download the drivers on the AMD HD5450 website, it just takes me to download the catalyst software, and it will still not open up.

I consider myself a "noob" also, don't worry.

But can you re-install the windows entirely? As in, wipe everything out, reinstall completely. This means, if you have any sensitive data, you would need to store them somewhere where you can access them afterwards.

If not, it does not matter where you download this "exe" file from AMD / Nvidia website. Just put it on your deskto pand run it. It is an installer file which will guide you through as to where the files will be installed but it'll do its own job and isntall the drivers on its own.

On the AMD website, you shoudl be able to select your model, ir not, the generation like "AMD HD 5xxx series drivers" or something. Choose the right one and download the appropriate files as I mentioned already; ie. drivers + catalyst software. If I'm not mistaken, they have a bundle file which contains both or more.

In addition:

1) I don't know what you mean by these "55 files". I have no idea what you're referring to. Can you be more specific or someone who is an expert may be help you out with a blink of an eye.

2) Maybe you should try running the file "as an administrator"? What OS are you using?

3) When you say, it doesn't open, you mean it does nothing when you double click it?

It is not a bad idea to just restart everything! I tryed to download bundle file with catalyst software, but the catalyst software will not open at all. The computer almost completly ignores it!

1) By 55 files I mean that the web site is sujesting that I should download 55 drivers I guess

2) I am running windows 8
3) IT will not do anything when double clicking it:mad:

By Chipset + LAN + SATA is a=that all included in mobo drivers? Audio in the GPU drivers?

Thanks again!

No, those are strictly motherboard drivers.

GPU driver is completely separate.

Please tell me this: at least you had the software (ie. Catalyst) installed successfully? Or is it the installer that is not loading at all?

1) Have you downloaded the right version? As in, Windows 8 friendly version?
2) Go to Task manager and make sure that the process (ie. Catalyst) isn't already running. If it is, exit that thing.
3) It might start on its own at the start up. Not too familiar with Windows 8, but can you go to start, run "msconfig.exe" and see the list of all services and processes that start at the beginning of your Windows 8 boot? Disable Catalyst if it is there and manually load again.

I have decided that I just want to do a clean re-install on my computer. My network drivers seem to not be working...its getting frustrating..but hey! There is a first time for everything.

Only problem is...I have no idea how to do that..any suggestions?

Err... I'm assuming you have a copy of your windows CD? with the right product code and stuff?

Then make sure you store your important information somewhere else like USB stick or omsething temporarily

Then run the CD with install (it'll give you messages about wiping out your hard drive, etc etc but of course, you saved all your information).

Read CAREFULLY and do the following IN ORDER:

  1. Download (but don't install yet) AMD drivers here
  2. Download and install (but don't run yet) DriverSweeper
  3. Go to Add and Remove Programs and Uninstall anything to do with ATi/AMD
  4. Restart
  5. Run DriverSweeper and select AMD/ATi graphics options and select clean.
  6. Restart
  7. Install the AMD/ATi driver downloaded at point 1
  8. Restart.
  9. Download and install this
  10. Restart
  11. Download and install this
  12. Restart
  13. Update Windows.
  14. Restart

Then once you have done all of the above in order:

  1. Right click on Computer
  2. Properties
  3. Device Manager

and post here a screen shot of the device manager in full if possible (we want to see any yellow or red flagged hardware).
