AMD K6 3D Processor

Hi there every one im, new here my name is john. I am pretty good with computer, i do all my repairs and some upgrades to my computer my self. Now there is just a few thing I dont know, that I was hoping some of you may be able to help me. Now my computer is a bit old. I have a PC100 Surfboard motherboard Socket Super 7 that has an AMD K6 processor @ 337 MHZ, 192 MB RAM, 9.54 Gigabyte hard drive, 64 MB Nvidia Detonator video card, CD drive etc. Now im runnign Windows XP Pro, it work pretty good, when you use the internet you cant tell much of a difference in speed just sometime when you download things. Its a fairly decent system I dont complain alot about it. Now im at the stage where I want to maybe upgrade a bit to bring it abit up to par, the max memory it will take is 512MB (2x256MB sticks) and I'm alright with that, Now since my computer is running at 337 MHZ I cannnot put an external hard drive because they need a minimum of 500MHZ processor. What I would like to know is what is the fastest processor I can purchase and install on my computer and what kind of Hard Drive would I also need to purchase (IDE, ATA, S-ATA, P-ATA)?

you'll need an ide ata drive. as for a processor upgrade, youll have to find what cpu's your motherboard can support and look around on ebay and see what you can find.

i think you can stay with the same HD, but you need 2 know what the FSB is on the current CPU, dont have 2 be the same Cache, just FSB, and also, the most that the mobo will handle, in MHZ. i got a AMD K-6 system 2, but bought the wrong FSB CPU, and it didnt work.

you'll want a processor with an FSB (Front Side Bus) of 100Mhz, but i could be wrong so download and run this and see what it says the FSB is.

i never had to look up anything, he said that he had PC100 ram so i automatically knew, but i will try to find out some stuff about a processor upgrade.

edit: ive been looking for a few minutes and havent been able to find anything

You CAN have an external HD. Who ever told you it requires a 500MHz machine is full of it. Now, don't expect super performance, but it is capable.

You're best bet would be an internal HD, PATA/IDE/ATA of course(they're all the same) However, don't get anything too big. Sometimes the bios's are limited to what size HD you can have. You should be safe with a 120G max...though I wouldn't get that big. Maybe find a place with a good return policy ;)

As for the super7 socket...lets see... I know the Pentium went up to 233MHz with MMX. The K6-2 went up to around 533MHz(but those are actually much slower than a PII 350MHz, so probably about the same as the 233MHz) Cyrix had some processors too, but I wouldn't even consider those.

Processor and RAM don't always have the same FSB, you know...

well my cousin bout a new processor (p3) from this computer here in toronto but he didnt see any AMD processor so i know there probably out there in one of thoses cuz i dont trust ebay

do u kno the place office depot¿ i wuz looking there to buy an external hd, and it saiid 500MHz min, and for the internal i dont need anything that big 40 gig is fine but i would prefer to put at least 60-80 gig at least on this machine rite now. what i really want is 1tb

your system wouldnt support 1tb, it would probally be lucky to support 100gb. how could you ever fill a terabyte up? it would take ages, lol:D

1TB for my system now way on a new system of course, cause i want a new system but im making due with what i have now. I might get a new system by septemeber, i mix music, do some graphics and movie editing plus i use archtiectural programs so i need more space on my system

you may want to upgrade the entire system.
i suggest a cheap AM2 board with 6100 integrated graphics, a sempron proc at 1.6ghz, and 1gb of ddr2 memory. all these will cost probably around $200... $250 if you decide to get a new hard drive as well.
it would be a huge improvement... and you'd be able to do pretty much anything you like at a nice easy pace lol

mobo with integrated graphics around $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186099
cpu around $70 (comes with farcry! lol)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104301
1gb (2x512mb) ddr2 533 also around $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141225
80gb sata2 hard drive 7200rpm 8mb buffer around $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822135106

so thats less than $250 for a new setup to throw in your old computer case... not to mention the motherboard features pci-e, the newest socket AM2, and ddr2. its a microATX motherboard, so it'll pretty much fit into your case no matter what.

if you really want 1TB you can get two of these...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136014
lol two of those is a good $450 tho lol
but getting 4x250gb hard drives would be cheaper...

well im planning to get a new system but im know its not gonna be till septmeber maybe longer (im getting a summer job so depends how much meney i make) . so here in toronto, ontario (canada) i can get hard drives and the memory for cheap (the memory for real cheap because my cousin knows a guy who can sell it to him for cheap he sold him a 512 PC100 memory stick for $40) but all i need is a inexpensive fast processor that fits into my super 7 socket. casuse if i get a new system for myself, then my brother and sister will be using this one so i need to make it decent.

ok sounds good... make a thread on it when you start planning your new comp :D
maybe by that time you can get 2 cheap terabytes lol that would be enourmous.

for sure ill make a thread with the new computer specs, but i proabably wont put 1 tb at first. ill probably start off with like 320 or a 400 gig hdd then move my way up
