i just got my new cpu, i was wondering if anyone knew how high i can overclock my AMD Opteron 144 (i have excellent cooling)

It depends on your motherboard, ram, psu, and the exact chip you have. Everyone's varries, you can expect to get anywhere from 100Mhz to 1Ghz overclock.

im kinda new to the overclocking business cuz i just recently upgraded to a good system, i wanted to know if my only concern with overclocking would be overheating?

overheating can be an issue, but motherboard have safe guards in place to prevent damage. You biggest issue is over voltage, the way to deal with this is to tred carefully when overclocking, allow youself 0.2-0.3v as a maximum increase, but rememeber increased vcore = increase temp so you need very good cooling.

lol, its true though ;)

And as apj said, heat and voltage are the two biggest concerns. When your overclocking, watch the temp to make sure that its in the cpu's safety range, and make sure your motherboard is set to shut down if the cpu goes over a certain temp.

We really can't tell you how high your Opteron can overclock, as every chip has it's own personality, or so to say.

As [-0MEGA-] said, it could be 100MHz OC or a 1GHz OC.

to make sure my mobo is set to shut off under unsafe temps, is this done in the bios where the settings for the card, mobo etc. is?

Yes, there should be a temperature threshold in which the computer will shut down if that temperature is reached.

You should be able to set that temperature threshold in the BIOS.

as for cooling, im setting up a 120mm fan in the front sucking air into the case, with two 120mm fans pulling air out of the back, on top of the mobo , PSU and VC fans. should this be sufficient cooling if i want to severly overclock my VC and mobo?

im just using the stock hsf
well that will be ok to a point, but if your considering these heavy overclocks that you are discussing then you may need to consider an aftermarket hsf, or exotic cooling
