AMD or Intel...

I'm building a new computer, and I need help on this decision. I can either get the following:

Intel® Pentium® D 940 Dual-Core CPU @ 3.2GHz 800FSB 2x2MB L2 Cache EM64T
and
Free World of Warcraft

or

AMD Athlon™64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
and
Free Age of Empires 3
Free Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends

The price difference is that with the Intel, I pay $50 more. I'm looking mainly for game performance, but also overall performance.

The X2 3800+ would be the best choice out of those two. Although the Core 2 Duo would be the best, if you could have that as an option.

As I've read most everywhere, AMD's are the fastest when doing single applications(such as gamming) Intel's are faster when multitasking. Most any review/benchmark will tell you this. But I do agree with Omega. The Core Duo is suppose to be MUCH faster than any current AMD, so it's definetly worth checking out.

Well to put it simply, here are my computer choices (the parts not listed are coming from this computer, like floppy drive, DVD drive, etc. or is default/stock):

# CASE: X-Discovery Mid-Tower Case 420W W/ WINDOW & LCD Temperature Display
# FLASHMEDIA: INTERNAL 12in1 Flash Media Reader/Writer (BEIGE COLOR)
# FAN: AMD ATHLON64 CERTIFIED CPU FAN & HEATSINK
# HDD: 160GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 8M Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
# MEMORY: 1GB (2x512MB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory (Corsair Value Select or Major Brand)
# SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO
# VIDEO: NVIDIA Geforce 6200 Graphics with TurboCache supporting 256MB 16X PCI Express VIDEO CARD

And along with the CPU's and motherboards, here are the prices:

AMD Athlon™64 X2 4600+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
and
GigaByte GA-M55SLI-S4 nForce4 SLI Chipset DDR2/800 SATA 16x PCI-Express MBoard w/GbLAN, IEEE1394, USB2.0, & 7.1Audio
$580

Intel® Pentium® D 960 Dual-Core CPU @ 3.6GHz 800FSB 2x2MB L2 Cache EM64T
and
ECS C19-A SLI nForce4 SLI Chipset LGA775 1066FSB DDR2/667 SATA Dual 16X PCI-E Slots w/7.1Audio, GbLAN,& USB2.0
$680

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6600 CPU @ 2.4GHz 1066FSB 2x2MB L2 Cache
and
Intel DP965LT I965 Chipset LGA775 Supports Core 2 Duo CPU FSB1066 DDR2/800 Mainboard w/GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394 & 7.1Audio
$780

I'm trying to get a computer that will last for the next 6 years (at least), and it will be used mainly for school, with some occasional games, such as "Black and White 2", "The Sims 2", and "Civilization IV". So what's the best bang for my buck?

If those games are all your going to be playing I don't think you will need the power of a Duo. Any of those you have listed would do fine for what you need, personally if you are not going to get Duo then I suggest you stay away from Intel, because of AMD's recent price cuts.

The AMD Athlon X2 3800+ Is definitely the better choice when it comes down to pretty much anything,AMD has better dual core architecture than intel so...Oh..did i mention they are at a very good price right now?

i'd say the Intel.
Why do you post suggestions when you really have no idea what you're talking about? The X2 3800+ would be the best choice for virtually any task that he will be performing. Not to mention it's cheaper then the 940.

thats my .2 cents....

your right, i have no knowledge about CPU's, with all the 3800+, 4300-048 etc. lol.

AMD or Intel?

Either one of those CPU's would do perfectly fine for about anything you throw at it, but if I were choosing one, I would definatley go for the AMD. Better performance in games, and cheaper also.
