AMD performance

Granted you are ... but (1) the Pentium4 3.0Ghz chip has been discontinued and (2) the fact that it's a 64bit processor (or 32bit) doesnt matter

Agreed, but that's not exactly what I meant. I should have been clearer. The 64bit AMD has an on-die memory controller, which makes it totally unreasonable to even begin to compare it to a 32bit Intel, which does not have that feature.

I've always hated it when people want to compare AMD to Intel. Neither is better overall, just each has advantages for specific uses. For a typical family computer, it doesn't matter which one you get. Just get whatever is cheaper. But all my customers demand to know why their computer has one instead of the other. Lots of people can't seem to grasp that there is only a difference with CPU intensive tasks, and your average family pc will not be doing anything like that.

The on-die controller is only really important for gaming, so its not unreasonable to compare them.

He he, but at least they know the 2 exist :D

Check out this link..

This is like the "Mother" of all CPU charts that i have seen, and it allow you to test every chip on the planet against another one in several tests. I dont know how accurate it is, because it shows an "el~cheapo" AMD 3000+ blows my 2.53 P4 chip away on every test.

One thing is for sure, my next chip will be an AMD. This coming from a life long Intel man...

1) why wouldn't it
2) Provided we arn't talking about the sempron 3000+ (which i doubt) then the
amd 64 3000+ = $146
p4 @2.53 (northwood) = $136
unless the test was takling about the the amd xp 3000+ = $115, then i'll agree its cheaper, otherwise it ain't

That's all well and good but since you can't test them all on the same system there will be other factors effect the results. AMD and Intel both make good CPUs so just be sure to see what each company is better at and what you will be doing before you go and buy one.

For some reason i cant get the fact that the AMD 64 3000+ is a lower ghz rating than my 2.53 P4, and cant make the transition to AMD without thinking the lower ghz chip (AMD) is somewhat "less" than my P4. I dont know why i keep thinking like this except that i have had so many Intel chips and no AMD's yet. I am in the process of building a new computer now, and i know i will be using an AMD chip (mostly gaming), but still not sure about which one yet.

Its just hard for me to get into my head how a 1.8 ghz chip (AMD), can be much faster than my 2.53 ghz chip (P4) that i have now. It just doesnt make much sence to me, because i have always used the ghz rating to see speed. But, i dont know much about this stuff, just now learning.

Thats fine, do read cpu101

that should explain more

Yes, I have been reading all of the "101" topics and have learned much the past few days since i have found this message board, for which i am very thankful to whoever set it up. So far i have only purchased a new mid tower, and believe i have decided on a motherboard, which will be the Asus "premium" 939 socket board (unless someone has a better suggestion).

I think i will buy the very cheap AMD 64 3000+, or 3200+ so i can learn to overclock. So far all i know about Overclocking is how to say the word "Overclocking", so, i have the Overclocking 101 to read.

You say "32bit Intel" like the address bus size matters ...

Hehe get used to it :P

Think of it this way... 3000 refers to 3000MHz, which equals 3GHz. So in your case, it would be comparable to a 3GHz P4.
its ok i feel your pain :P . I thought of it that way too before reading this post. and everyone is making fun of you :D lol

it's ok that you though like that, i mean that kinda was what amd wanted when they came up with the system

I was trying to make a generalization... guess I know better for the future.

That Tom's Hardware Guide thing where it compares CPU's is amazing. I checked out the difference between the AMD 64 3000+ that I'm getting and an Intel Pentium 4 3.4 GHz in the Doom 3 benchmark (my favorite game, so I'll be playing it a lot) and the AMD beat out the 3.4 GHz moster!!!

it a good rough guide, but just dont take it as gospel

Ya, but I just love it cuz it scares the crap outta me! Now I'll have the crap scared outta me on high graphics!!

so ur saying an AMD 4800+ is equivelent to a pentium 4.8 GHz? lol
