AMD Phenom II x4 920 vs AMD Phenom II x4 940

Well, for starters, I already know that the 940 is the better processor by .2ghz, but in the long-run, is it really that much better?

I have the option right now to choose the 920 or the 940. The 920 is $40 cheaper. I am thinking I can always overclock the CPU to match the stock speed of the 940 and possibly even meet the overclocked speeds that the 940 can get up to.

What do you think? What would you choose, and what should I go with?
Should I save $40 and go with the 920 or just get the best of its line and buy the 940?

Please think of overclocking potentials as well with your posts if you can. :)

The 940 is better, it has an unlocked multiplier which is better for overclocking, which means you can overclock further than the 920.

if you're into high overclocks or benchmarking, then 940 is by far better. just think of intel's Q9650 ($350) vs QX9650 ($1000). the only difference is that the QX has an unlocked multiplier for a $650 price difference. for AMD, $40 for unlocked multiplier is hardly a price difference compared to intel's unlocked multiplier price difference.

but if you only do mild overclocks, perhaps the 920 is better for you.

Please explain further guys.. :)
I was reading somewhere that the 940 can only get up to like 3.5ghz. Isn't it possible for the 920 to hit around the same speed with ease?

I'm ideally looking to overclock one of these to 4.0ghz with ease just using air cooling (a few fans). You tell me which one I should get...would the $40 extra be totally worth it? I'm just asking because the 940 overclock benchmarks hasn't really been shown yet, at least I haven't seen it.

if it can only get to 3.5 your gonna have a hell of a time getting 4.0
That's from what I've read unless you can show me otherwise, using strictly air-cooling?

Can anyone show me some overclocked benchmarks for the 920 and 940 using strictly air cooling (no water cooling etc please)?

Well you know the 940 is going to get the higher yield cores, just because they are the BE models. If you just trying to get to 3.5, then either one would probable do that, 920 maybe alittle harder. But if 4ghz (with ease) dont think 4ghz would be (easy) is your goal, then you need to spend the extra 40 for the 940.

i wouldn't say 4ghz is with ease. that speed is not guaranteed on every chip on air with little effort. higher expectations results in disappointment when you get a bad chip

Can anyone please show me some benchmarks of these CPUs being overclocked please! 920 & 940 models!

Well I've got my 940 at 3.4GHz on the stock cooler, I could push it a bit farther if you want, I just don't trust that dinky little heatsink :P

Soon as I get enough money for a good HSF I can show you some good benchmarks.

well the 940 is already more powerful, but if you're interested in overclocking, to get the unlocked multiplier you'll need the 940 black edition.

Look at PC user for february, it gives benchmarks on the OPhenom 940 and 920. They boast 4.5 on the 940, AMD boasts up to 6.0ghz on water but there a speculations on whether or not AMD's were true.
