Hello

I have AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor and I want to upgrade to a better amd processor. My socket type is AM2, and I'm thinking of upgrading to AM3.Is that possible?

Thanks

You will need a new motherboard and new memory. And depending on the license of windows you have you may need a new copy.

Most likely not. What motherboard do you have?

That's because they made those chips in that socket for a brief time.

Correct, as the IMC supports DDR2 & DDR3 and are pin compatible, they work in both varieties of boards. The chance would be pretty slim but more information is better than less if he could upgrade just the CPU itself.

That number you gave me represents a laptop.

edit. seems its comes up being a laptop and desktop. Either way its an oem computer and your stuck with what you got. You will need a new system.

I edited my post. You are stuck with what you got.

I've made a search on google.

"Socket AM3 processors are able to run on Socket AM2 and AM2+ motherboards with appropriate bios updates, but not vice-versa. AM3 processors have a new memory controller supporting both DDR2 and DDR3 SDRAM, allowing backwards compatibility with AM2 and AM2+ motherboards. Since AM2 and AM2+ processors lack the new memory controller, they will not work on AM3 motherboards."
