AMD Processors

depends what your planning to do, if your upgrading on a current socket then the FX-62 is the best but also ridiculously priced, the X2 5200 would most likely be the better choice

if however this is a new build replacing the motherboard and such then a core 2 duo from intel would be better

there is a HUGE difference between the FX55 and the 62, with the 55 being single core and the 62 being dual. Unless you're into OCing alot, I'd go with the X2 5200.

that's a nice observation there, but those aren't the two cpu's in question. he was asking about the 5200+ vs. the fx-62 (which are both dual core, btw).

the fx series have unlocked multipliers. if you want to overclock, then go with the fx-62. otherwise, the 200mhz advantage the fx-62 has is not worth the price. they both have the same cache size.

Then why did he say FX55/FX62?

The FX-62 is would be the best because of it's overclocking potential, but you pay a premium for it.

i think he wanted to know about the whole range of fx products, and what made them better than, say, the x2 5200+ (which is the fastest x2 proc. right now). that's what i got out of the question anyway.

diduknowthat was the only one who read the post when including to the FX-55 model in his reply. Now let's look at the specifications seen on the three not two models in question.

For the 5200+ X2 model, http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADA5200IAA6CS Socket AM2 model cpu

For the FX-55 mentioned with a slash then FX-62 model(AMD FX-55/FX-62) note that there are two different FX-55 models to look over. http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADAFX55DEI5AS and http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADAFX55DAA5BN both of these are Socket 939 model cpus.

And for the FX-62 Socket AM2 model, http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADAFX62IAA6CS

The FX line of AMD cpus is the gamer's choice and has unlocked multipliers for ocing. I trust you are looking into a new build and wanting general information on which AMD model to go with since you have a Socket 754 model board listed in your signature. The X2 models on the other hand are geared towards multitasking and similar to the Socket 940 models used for server cases soon to be replaced with quad core model cpus later this year.

I'm not quite sure what your trying to say, but just theres no confusion the X2, FX55, and FX62 are NOT socket 754 CPU's. They are only 939 and AM2.

Those are both basically the same cpu with a different name. However the FX series is WAY higher in price then any X2, get the X2 5200 and it should have the same performance as the FX-62 considering they are both the same.

The entire line of FX models for both 939 and AM2 boards is geared for performance with the idea of ocing in mind. This is why those come with the unlocked multiplier on them. The X2s like the Socket 940 server models are intended more for multitasking while a few models are still oc capable.

The first part is absolutely correct, just like the Extreme versions for Intel. If you don't plan to overclock it, paying a premium for unlocked multipliers would be pretty stupid, when you can find the same model but with locked multipliers for much less.

if your a AMD fanboy like me wait for socket am2+ it will be comming out Q3 this year and will have midrange quad cores
correction AM3 procs not am2+

The thing I'm interested here will concern any quad core FX models that may eventually come along after the initial server types are on the market. But that is still long range not immediate pondering there. I'll probably looking at the AM3 models for the next build since the 2007 build was put back. For the current 939 the FX 60 or Opteron 185 is still on the agenda.
