AMD Question

Hi there

I have a question i must ask as everytime i want to purchase a game for my pc i have to think.

I currently have a AMD Sempron 2800+ which runs at 2GHZ but ive heard that my 2GHZ cpu is just as fast as a Intel 2.8ghz cpu is this true?

If yes would i be able to play games which require 2.8 GHZ of processor speed?
Thankyou.

when looking at a sempron its more comparable to a celeron, but somewhat better.
i would say you're pretty safe in assuming its the rough equivalent of 2.8 ghz

If it's not just as fast it's comparible. A year or so back a study was done comparying AMD Durons with Celerons. a 1.6Ghz Duron outperformed a 2.6 Ghz Celeron.

Intel's strategy is to just push the clock speed up as high as they can get it. AMD's strategy is to get more out of each clock cycle. So even though the clock speed is technically slower more is being done in each clock cycle therefore AMD chips are faster internally.

Some games say on there cpu requirements "OR AMD EQIVALENT"
marketing teams hardly know what they are on with, and there ignorance compounds peoples confusion.

If yes would i be able to play games which require 2.8 GHZ of processor speed?
First off, the minimum system requirements can often be woefully short of the minimum usable requirements.
You should also note that games, app for that matter, don’t really work on a finite basis like that. Its not a case of you can either play it if you meet the specs, or not if you don’t meet the specs. There is a gradient of playability; whereby the quality of the graphics will improve steadily as you move away from the minimum specs (which often play v.poor).
In short if it comes to a situation where you are doubtful if you meet the minimum specs, then you are already at a point where your graphics may hinder your game play experience anyway

Yea, the way i look at it when an amd processor says 2800+ i take the last two zeros off and add a deciman between the 2 and the 8. Crude yes, but helps me.
