AMD Radeon R9 290X compatibility problems?

Hi there, I have this computer with these specs

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS Z87-K ATX w/ GbLAN, 2 PCIe x16 (1 Gen3, 1 Gen2), 2 PCIe x1, 3 PCI
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4770K 3.50 GHz 8MB Intel Smart Cache LGA1150
VIDEO: AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 x16 Video Card
POWERSUPPLY: 1,200 Watts - LEPA G1200-MA 80 Plus Gold Certified Modular Power Supply
HDD: 2TB (2TBx1) SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
MEMORY: 32GB (8GBx4) DDR3/1866MHz Dual Channel Memory

I just bought it online. When I turned it on for the first time I noticed the graphics were corrupted. I then put in the cd for my video driver but 75% through the installation the computer screen turned black and the fan starts spinning fast, I then have to kill the power. Also the computer will do this at any random time its just never let me install the video driver(I remembered to uninstall the old display drivers). Then I went to my bios and the graphics were also corrupted there. So I changed the graphic configuration to iGPU and took out the R9 290X and plugged the vga into my motherboard and the corruption was gone!

Is it a compatibility problem or is there something wrong with the graphic card?

Thanks for your time

I think you either have a damaged card, or it wasn't seated properly or one or more of the power connectors wasn't plugged in properly.

If you still have it, try putting it in again but make sure it's in firmly and all power connectors are plugged in properly.

If it's still bad, then I think you have a damaged card. :(

If the graphics are corrupt in the bios then it is not the graphics card.

I would (with the R9 uinstalled) do this (print it out and do it in order):

  1. Enter windows in safemode with networking (tap F8)
  2. Download and install DriverSweeper (but don't run it)
  3. Uninstall all nvidia and AMD drivers in the standard way (Add and Remove drivers)
  4. Restart normally and enter normal windows (not graphics card installed)
  5. Download latest BIOS to a USB stick
  6. Run Driver Sweeper for both AMD and nvidia
  7. Restart
  8. Enter the BIOS
  9. Upgrade the BIOS
  10. F10 save and restart
  11. Enter BIOS
  12. Set default (F5)
  13. F10 save and restart
  14. Enter the BIOS
  15. Set your custom settings (PEG, boot priorites and so on)
  16. F10 save and restart.
  17. Shut down.
  18. Install the R9 290x
  19. Start Windows and install the latest AMD drivers.
  20. Restart.
