amd??

i would say any AMD dual core
In a $500 machine? You'd have to make too many other compromises to make it work (particularly the video card). Either look for an Intel Dual Core CPU, like the 805 or 820, or, if you'll mainly be gaming, a single core AMD.

Take a look at Computer Spec 101 for some ideas.

but i wont do multi-heavily
Then why are you looking for a dual-core processor?

he didn't ask for a dual core... he asked for the best AMD processor for a $500 budget or so computer.
everyone else just suggested the dual cores because theyre sweet :) i should know :)

well i thought dual cores or such more of a big differance or do u think i should just go with a really good single-core and maybe buy an exra gig of ram?? what would be a good single core? thx

dual cores make a big difference for some apps, not so much for others. it depends on what you'll be doing, but it sounds to me like dual cores is too much for your budget.... but basically

what will you be doing with the computer?

a lot better, but you can't compare with pentium d,
because pentium d is a dual core cpu,
dual core cpu from AMD starts from x2 3800 which is $300 alone,,,

at least it is 64bit, 3000+ meaning, you can possibly use it on both 32bit softwares and 64bit ones also, competible

right now it will work really nice with window xp

i am not sure, but if you upgrade your video card, that allows direx 10,
and get like at least 2Gb ram...
i am sure you can use those cpu/monbo for window vista

i thought about window vista also, when i bought my new computer...
and 64bit computer means it is competible with window vista

the video cards that is on the market now, i don't think any of them are competible with window vista.
unless you spend like $800;; which i don't think you would want to

so right now, you can just get a pci-express card for may be $100,
like the choic of yours 6600gt, (although 6800 is much better)

when window vista comes out, you will have to upgrade your video card anyway.
so don't spend too much on it if i were you...

serious? that sucks y dont they have vista compatible with graphics cards what bout the new 7900 everyone spending like $500 goin to have to get a new one lata if they want vista anywho i will till vista comes out until i build my own

they make more money?

and i am not sure if 7900 is compatible with window vista or not,,,
i will put up a thread on video card section, asking if it does or not...

but the video card i got, x850 is not compatible with window vista, so i will have to buy a new one later..
