The FX series is designed as an enthusiast line, and features an unlocked multiplier for exceptional overclocking abilities. They are extremely expensive, and of the FX series, only the FX60 is Dual Core (and clocked 200Mhz higher than the X2 4800+).
The X2s are AMDs general Dual Core line. They're far cheaper, and come without the unlocked multiplier.
So overall the FX series is the 'top of the line', but if you do get one other than the FX60, you're stuck with a single-core processor.

Although if you're planning to do more multitasking than gaming, X2 is the way to go because of the dual core.

i'd agree with the higher grade silicon thing... the FX-60 has been overclocked to 3ghz before though 
i believe it was used in a benchmark on tomshardware that i saw before, against that and the P4 extreme edition o/ced at 4.26ghz (from 3.73ghz)
and also, you don't NEED AMD's to be higher than 3ghz yet... i mean REALLY you want like 8099349583 fps? lol i don't think that would be playable... jk it would be pretty cool if they did come out with a new line 3ghz and higher.
(btw AMD still has yet to hit 65nm and o/c more, and theyre still performing better than MOST intel chips, so who knows)...
