amd64 v x2 series

how much benifit woul you get from a athlon 64 x2 4200 vompared to a athlon 64 4000 singel core
Maybe a lot, maybe not. Do you need the ability to execute 2 threads at the same time or do you just want a gaming boost? If it's the latter go with the single core because a dual core will do next to nothing for you.

i want to use it for gaming video editing multi threding but the 4000 is much cheeper i was wondering would teh x2 be much better for me then

i have an x2 3800, seems to be as quick if not quicker than my friends a64 3500+... i can't really compare any benchmarks because we lack video cards, but i load maps in bf2, for example, a little bit quicker than he does, with similar setups.

p.s. - on the flip side, i do have to disable a core for bf2 so that it stays connected to servers

what y not as good for gaming
i simple terms. Games for the most part are single threaded and thus unable to utilise the additional core. And each core in the x2 is clocked less than its single core counterpart

Well, A single core processor will be stronger than a similarly priced dual-core processor, BUT, Dual cores have their strong points. My PC is the best AMD processor, stronger than the best X2

Yes, an FX-57 is probably the best single core CPU to date but It is easy to overclock a much cheaper A64 for that price. By Sandra, my OCd CPU is on par with an FX-55 and I can easily get to FX-57 status with better RAM. The best deal for a single core is if you overclock an A64 3000 or 3200, maybe the 3500.
An X2 is definitely the way t go if you want to do a lot of video encoding. I convert DVDs to very high-quality DivX videos with my OCd A64 3200 and it takes about 2 hours for a full length clip. With an X2, you could do that in half the time.

lol yep and when multithreded games come out ooooo your fx is going down

It won't be top of the line hardware by that time, there will be no interest in that processor.

seems to run games just fine... and my music software.... and media player.... at the same time. creating dvd's is pretty fast too. haven't oc'ed it yet and it's plenty quick for me as it is. can't wait until i do.
granted, single cores are faster, for games, but the difference isn't greatly noticeable.

X2's are amazing...

there are already games out (FEAR) that are said to use Dual core CPU's to a limited degree. Many more games are already being developed and published that will have dual core support. Also, the overclocking potential on the X2's (using 90nm cores) suggest they are pretty impressive pieces of silicon...a buddy of mine picke dup a 4400+ and oced it to 2.8GHZ on air.....thats two FX-57 cores on one chip....tell me that thing cant run games well......
