im thinking of upgrading to either amdx2 3800 with an asus a8v-mx via socket 939 mainboard, with 1 gig duel channel ddr pc3200

or a pentium d 940 with an ecs p4m800 pro-m via socket 775 mainboard, with 1 gig of ddr2 pc4200.

i want to be able to be online while maybe chatting and listening to music, while maybe burning a cd and downloading files from internet. i will be recoding movies and burning them as well. which way should i go..the price difference is around 50 bucks between the two bundles with amd being higher...also, are online ordered products such as mainboards/cpu/ram likly to not work when shipped or is it pretty reliable i plan on going through tiger direct and pricewatch...thanks for your help

For your uses you dont need a high end CPU like the ones you posted, but if you do want one of those, i would go with the X2 3800+.

The AMD package is better, but i see no reason to buy it, unless you plan on doing some light gaming or something. Otherwise, just buy an AMD 3000+ or something.

geoff and itlan, he said he would be encoding video while browsing, downloading, etc, which my parent's 3200 cannot handle. i think the x2 3800 would be perfect for such a task.

if you relaly want dual core, get the cheaper one, cause for your purposes, both processors are more than adequate.

If thats the case, then a P4 ~3Ghz w/HT would be fine. Or if you want dual-core, the 805 is a good choice.

But as i said before, if you want one of those two, go with the X2 3800+.

i posted this thread

alright so i got 1 for 1 right now and still no one has said if online ordering and products are pretty rliable for the websites i mentioned earlier

I would recommend buying through www.newegg.com They usually have the cheapest prices on pricewatch, they are very trustworthy, they have fast and not too expensive shipping, and a large variety of products.

I have personally bought from there before, and i bet almost everyone on this forum has to.

yea, encoding and such can be done while browsing if you set the priority lower in task manager... that way the processor does your browsing first, then the encoding next.
2gb of ram would be a better upgrade for the system rather than the dual core processor.

yea thats a pretty good deal, im not really a fan of either... i just dont like Pentium 4 lol
Pentium D's really arent bad for the price! :)
the pentium D 940 is actually hand in hand with the X2 3800+...
but generally the X2 3800+ is still better for gaming.
its easily o/cable to 2.4ghz too! thats 400mhz for free! lol...
4600+ speeds at a 3800+ price... not bad if you ask me! lol
actually im not sure how but my proc beat an FX-60 in sisoftware sandra's benchmarks. weird isnt it? im running the same frequency with less cache.
