An assortment of strange problems after incorrect shutdown

I was working on a customer's computer which was not outputting video to the monitor, while fixing it I updated the driver for the graphics card (a Nvidia 9600gt), afterwards he acciedntly forced a shutdown by holding down the power button which was either during startup or just afterwards. Now his computer has several problems which I belive are being caused by one or more corrupted files.

The problems are as follows:

1. Skype
Cannot access Skype. I enter my user-id and password and Skype loading icon is displayed indefinitely. I can exit using the Skype Exit & Quit options.

2. Browsing Slow
Occasional 3-7 second delays with simple page navigation.

3. Major Browsing Delays with reports of Adobe Flash Manager crashed. This has happened many (>8x) times today.

4. Loss of sound
When trying to play Utube files. Initially sound OK but some action or maybe above problem seems to interfere with the sound card which causes loss of sound.

5. Forced Close when Exiting Windows 7
W7 states there is a problem closing and requests a forced shut-down. It specifically mentions EXPLORER.EXE as the cause of the issue. This occurs even if I simply boot the PC and then immediately Shut-Down Windows without doing ANYTHING (even loading a brower).

Initially his computer would lock up frequently under light load (browsing the internet) but after re-installing the graphics drivers the lock ups stopped but he was still left with the above problems. I instructed him to do a chkdsk and sfc /scannow which both found no errors so I'm geussing that if any files are corrupted they aren't covered by sfc /scannow.

If anyone has any idea on what could be causing all this could you please give me some advice as I would like to avoid doing a format and re-install of windows if possible.

By the way his computer is a Dell something running Windows 7, it origionally had 4 graphics cards but now only has 2 which are NVidia 9600GT and GT220

Incorrect shutdowns usually causes errors on the hard drive. First thing I would do is scan the drive for errors using the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility. What brand of hard drive is it?

Thanks for the reply. I don't know what brand it is but I'll find out and download the correct diagnocstic software for it. Any other suggestions?
