An odd problem..

Hi, I have been experiencing a weird problem lately..Sometimes when I'm just using my computer, it restarts by itself. I didn't do anything and all of a sudden it restarts. This problem has been continuing and after I log back on to my account, it says:

"Windows has recovered from a serious error.."

Or something like that and it has the button that says "send error report" or "don't send".

I'm not sure what's going on..Is it a virus or maybe some type of system problem? Please help. Thanks.

(Windows Xp Pro.)

I would say the most likely cause is excessive temperatures. Download Motherboard Monitor, or a similar program, and check your CPU temperatures. Most CPUs will shut down or restart at 65-70C.

Your power supply could also be causing the problem, Motherboard Monitor will also tell you what your voltage rails are running at. Ideally, they should all be within 5% of their rated voltage (e.g. +5V should be between 4.75 and 5.25V). Anything more than 10% out is a serious problem (except for -5V and -12V which aren't used on most modern systems).

I doubt you'll find any viruses causing that problem, but it's worth checking anyway.

Far less likely, but still possible, is faulty RAM. Consider downloading and running memtest86+ if nothing else works.

Hope some of this helps
