An Old Compaq

I have an old Compaq with no windows on it (im still setting it up).
When I got it off a friend it had a tiny 2 gig hard drive. Now what I have done is unplugged the single ribbon cable and put in a double one, plugged it into the hard drive (and the older one). The first time i started it up, it said: New settings detected Hard Drives: bla bla bla. Press F1 to save changes. I did that, but then it said: Disk Error. No internal disks detected.

What is happening?

Older compaqs stored a portion of their bios on the HD, so actually, I doubt you'll be able to swap the drives out like this. You'll probably just have to set it up as a slave.
