an unusual problem

right to cut a long story short....someone has been pretending to be me on msn messenger. my password was not changed....so they must have known my password. before you say anything....no one would have known my password but me and it's not a simple one at all. they've also been in my e mail account as i can tell that my messages have been read.

now i'm totally ignorant when it comes to computers. i am a female which doesn't help...as they are not as interesting as shoes. but is there anyway you can get identify anyone but you gaining access to your msn etc? is there anyway you can detect what IP address the messenges on msn were sent from? is there anyway you can tell where your e mail was opened from?

i know you'll probably all laugh at my totall ignorance but a girl's gotta try! thank you!

also...does your IP address change each time you go on the internet? or does your computer keep the same Ip address?

The reason that someone may know all your password is because mabye you have some type of keystroke logger on your computer that records what you type.
Try running a few different antivirus and antispyware scans and AFTER you have done the scans then change your passwords and any other things that they might have seen. And also you some IP addresses change when you connect to the internet. It depends what internet service provider you have. Some internet service providers give you a static ip address (doesn't change) but some give you a dynamic ip address (does change).

thank you for responding. i have AVG on my pc, and spybot search and destroy and i've run both of them and they came up with nothing. they also tried getting into my e bay account. is there anyway i can find out who this is? my friend is a programmer for microsoft....do you think he could find out? are there any tricks? lol or am i resigned to the fact i may never find out who this is....

I really dont think that you should just leave it. They can find out anything that you type if it is a keylogger. Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for a free online scan and if that shows up nothing then mabye someone just knows your password. Try changing them and if this person can still get into your msn account and ebay account try more virus scans because it must be a keylogger. Dont just leave it because if they get your password for stuff like online baking you could lose some money.

ran the above prog calum mentioned and it came up with nothing. do you think someone may have paid a hacker to get my password? i think it's someone i know.

i have high speed broadband.

if it's not a keylogger is there anyway i can find out who it is? many thanks for your help!

do you really think hotmail will help? i mean it's a free account so are they really going to go to all that trouble to help me? also if someone uses a dynamic Ip address how easy will it to be to trace them?

any more help would be much help!! thanks xx

i don't use a hotmail account on msn i use a yahoo account. if i read the conversation i was sent where someone was pretending to be me....could i trace the IP address from that convo? also how do i contact hotmail? thanks!

Hello guys.
Quite long time ago i have heard a similar story. It turned out that the problem was in an internet cafe. The thing is that if you go in an internet cafe (or in any computer that has ticked the option "save password and username" on msn) and sign in then your information are kept from the system until somebody else comes in to sign in and then you username and password will be overwritten. So if somebody else uses this machine can access to you msn without doing anything special.
My opinion about the tracking is that it's waste of time because no company would give confidential information because of individual privacy and also that a tracking process of a computer is really hard and thus they dont do it without a significant reason. i recommend you to to do :
1. change your email account password immediately
2.check if you logged in any computer outside your home and try to find out if you can change the sing in status of this machine if that is the case
3. Use a good Anti-virus software i d reckon Norton Internet Security 2007 in case of a kind of virus.

I hope i helped you

You can also try the programs "Ad-Aware" and "Avg Anti-spyware". The can detect if there is a key logger. Another thing is to have a firewall on your computer. I recommend Comodo.

Hope this helps

thank you for all your help. i've changed all my passwords etc, and i don't use any other pc's except my own. i'm pretty paranoid when it comes to things like that lol. got a firewall and all the other essential things. i just think it's someone i know and who'd playing tricks on me. shame i can't find out who it is!!! anyway thanks again for all your help have a good weekend!! xx
