Anyone know how to hide contact numbers in SMS messages? The text displays the contact name, then places their number in brackets next to their name.

Running Gingerbread 2.3.5.
See example picture below:

In ICS messaging app the number is only displayed at the top.
You can try Go SMS Pro, it has the same thing, it will display number at the top.
I use Go SMS Pro on ICS. Checkout the Go SMS Pro screenshots https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms&hl=en

Found this, Handcent SMS, will do the job for you

I used it temporarily but found Go SMS pro better, but this also wasn't that bad.
And don't worry about the app look you can install themes and change it completely. Like I have an ICS theme for GO SMS PRO, looks better than the original messagin app

I used Go SMS for a while previously, but it had a dramatic effect on my battery life.

This is fully dependent on your messaging app. Looks like your using the HTC one. Unfortunately I don't think it's easy to change messaging apps if your stock and unrooted. Vanilla Android only shows the number at the top of the screen with just the name on the actual messages.

Only thing to try really is open your sms app, go back to the list of all the people you texted and press the menu button, then settings. Maybe there's a setting in there for it.

Probably should have mentioned I'm rooted running Android Revolution HD.

I'm gonna give Handcent a try.

Hmmm, still sense framework.. Not sure how ingrained it can be, but it should be possible to find another sms messaging app from another rom and putting it into /system/app using root explorer. I'd definitely do a system backup before fiddling too much, though :P
